Last weekend, I broke one of the aluminum studs on the o/f cover.  Thanks to the search feature, I successfully made a jam-nut and remedied the situation.  I went to Home depot and got 2 25mm long bolts with the 10mm head, and carefully threaded the makeshift $0.89 solution into the block and used lockwashers.  This seems to be just fine, as it hasn't dropped a drop of oil yet. (2 of the three studs are now patched this way) My question to the gear heads is how long should I continue this patch job; I ordered the oem pieces from bikebandit, but was just wondering what the drawbacks of using galvanized bolts on the engine oil filter cover for any length of time.  I've been over 120 miles with no probs.
Thanks!

Use the studs - if you overtighten the cap nut you strip the stud or the nut.  Overtighten the bolt and you strip the engine case - If the stud corrodes itself to the case - as long as you can take off the nut you will never know - if the bolt corrodes to the case, you will snap it off trying to take it out and then it is easy-out time.

+1 for studs, breaking a stud isn't a bid deal, striping threads in the case is a major headache....
JUST IMHO
