Yeah people complain about hunters killing too many deer. As we move into the habitat of preditor animals, they move out and the animals that they normally prey on will increase in population.

Kind of ironic the other day when I had a friend come over to install frame sliders on her bike. It was late when she left and I warned her about a particular section of the road that I see deer at all the time. Sure enough there was a deer. Luckily there were not any problems. This time of the year we all need to be careful. With the cooler weather, the deer are more active.

It can happen all too quickly....

Common sense in not very common.

I have personally hit 3 deer in the last 6 years.  By the time you see them it is usually too late.  As far as I am concerned, we need more hunters to thin out the number of deer.

I'm sorry buddy but suck it up, we destroy their homes and then Buddha Loves You when they stand around...how the hell do they know it's a road...but deer do suck to hit my friend smoke one on his ZX 9 and we had it for supper, NO shot in it at all!

i say kill em all.   who needs deer

Blueknyt

kill only what i can eat, put out of misery (illness, injury, Failing age) or to protect people or other animals.

otherwise leave em be.  ive seen what happens to those that get left to nature to control completly, and it never effects just that species.

Conservation is important, but like all things, too much of even a good thing is bad.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.

living on a state highway, we shoot deer all the time, I got a spike about two weeks ago. shot him in my back yard.  had a curtesy call from the cops about 2 hours later.  he told me to start using a bow instead of a rifle as long as I am inside the city limits.   normally whenever someone calls the cops, they tell them whould you rather hit them with your car, they are going to die there eventually. that normally shuts them up.   damn tree huggin hippies always causing trouble.

Hey, I'm a tree huggin hippie!

I don't hunt, but then again I didn't grow up hunting, so....

If the natural predators of deer weren't killed off or displaced, then that would help a might bit.

In a car, I hit a deer once, on Bennett Valley Rd, between Santa Rosa, CA and Bennett Valley, at night.  I was goin over the speed limit of 50, probably goin about 60-65.  I knew lots of deer were around this area.  A big female jumped out in front of the car, then darted back to safety, then back into the front right quarterpanel, crumpling it.  I circled back and she was down and either instantly dead or close to it, or maybe in shock.  I drove and called the Sheriff (they had jurisdiction), and never found out what happened.

Back to the video, the thing that scares me, is that judging by the shadows, it was still the middle part of the day, several hours at least from dusk, and I wouldn't expect to see a deer in the road.  You can't ride slow enough at all times to avoid a deer, so I guess we're all just taking chances.

The guy in the video was going about 75mph (120km/h) when he hit the deer.  At what speed would he have been able to see the deer and brake and/or swerve?  50, 40, 30?  seems like a lower speed will just help to minimize damage to yourself in a situation like this one, where the deer just pops out of nowhere.

in LA, we just have guys on 50cc mini-sport bikes zippin around corners

I had a close one this morning  :o

I was on my 10 mile commute to work, and was about 1 mile from work. I see a deer out of the corner of my eye. He was whacked or something; he started running alongside of me like a dog chasing a car. So I was like WTF   . I eased off the throttle (was doing about 60) and gently applied the brakes; assuming he might do something stupid. Which he did.

He sprints out in front of me a little ways ahead of me, but TRIPS. :o  So here I am trying to slow down while keeping the bike under control and this stupid deer is basically scrambling in the road trying to get back on it's feet! I ended up well within 4-5 feet of hitting him. Luckily with the combination of me slowing the bike and the deer being able to regain his composure, he got out from in front of me and dashed into the woods.

Talk about a close one! Within 4-5 feet!  :o  :o
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

the last time I let my dad borrow my bike (I live with my parents ATM), he hit a deer on his way home.  it ran out in front of him, he hit the brakes, and had almost stopped when he hit it.  Smashed his right foot a bit, bent the front turn signal mount, and apparently snapped the deer's neck.  Dad doesn't have his motorcycle endorsement anymore (never did quite figure out what happened to let it lapse) because he hasn't had a bike in 15 years, so he left and came home.  I was brushing deer hair off of it for weeks afterwords, but no real damage done to anyone but the deer.

This was januaryish, I believe. =]

Great news! I just saved a bundle on car insurance by switching to a motorcycle!

If you discount the cow  my closest call was driving (my car) home from Taos, NM two or three years ago.  In the middle of the night.

I was zipping along a hilly 2-laner at around the speed limit (65mph).  As I topped a hill I saw 4 pairs of eyes in front of me. :o   I tensed up as the bottom dropped out of my stomach.  Luckily for me, two of the deer were standing in the left lane, and the other two were just off the right shoulder.

ZING! I went right between them, without changing my direction or speed.  I thought about that one for quite a few miles....

Very rare here but I was invited to lunch on Thursday and enjoyed a bit of one with an excellent brandy sauce, asparagus and baby new potatos, does that count?
