I race them all the time ... see you do like this ... Sit on the bike ... and go brrrroooom, brrrooooom .... waaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn..... waaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn ..... brrrrrroooooom ... bbrrrrrrrooooooommm.... waaaaaaaannnnnnnn .... etc ... leaning and shifting and weaving around other riders ... and you provide your own commentary ... but make sure you are still doing the brrooommm brrrroooooom thing ... else it just sounds like you're Dave Despain ... its the greatest ...
Cool.

Every area has a racing organization.  Ooooooooaklahoma:
http://www.cmraracing.com/

You need a racing license, first and foremost.  Actually, you need non-racing track time, first and foremost.  Tracking is taking a vehicle to 10/10ths.  Racing is taking it to 12/10ths.   :o

If you are going to race a 500cc class, or a lightweight twins class, or a clubman light class.
Your competition is going to be EX500's (faster), but the gs500 handles a bit better ( provided you get your front suspension upgraded to some progressive springs)

Get the rulebook of the club, or organization you are going to ride with.

Find out your bike requirements ( catch bottles, safety wire, glass removal, rider appearal etc)
You will need to safetywire your bike.
Get some descent rubber on your bike. ( your choice of rear tires 140's are limited) you may have to go with a bias-ply rear, but you can get a radial front.

Get your front springs almost HAVE to be swapped out.

As for your licensing requirements, check with the club.

You can race anything, being competitive is another matter....especially with a GS.

Do track days first. You get more seat time.
Common sense in not very common.

Anyone know about the racing club in Austin or San Antonio?

Track days are the way to go.  Way cheaper than racing, and you get more seat time.  Plus you can be out on the track with guys on Ducati 998 and GSXR 1000 et. all and lap faster (well if you are really fast) and just embarrass them.  I do it all the time.

better to buy a track prepped bike(or buy a second bike) if the GS is your only ride

i know where a GS race bike is (VA)
and
an EX 500 (NC)

I learned a LONG time ago
you can not race your street bike and you can not street ride your race bike...for long
