I currently use these. Alpinestar GPS 3 without the waterproofing.

Although comfortable, I still take a pair of shoes with me depending on where I go.

But lately I've been wanting something more casual and stylish (not so racy looking) for going out with my girl or work.

I'm thinking of the Icon Standard boots. http://www.newenough.com./icon_standard_boots_page.htm

Basically I would only use the ICON boot on my short commute to work or my girls house, or a quick jaunt to rent a movie and such.

What I want to know, is how much more am I giving up by using the ICON boot vs the AS boots? The only thing I can think of is I loose the shin protection and the ICON boots have laces.  

So basically on a scale of 1-10. 10 being a full on race boot and 1 being sandals.

I figure tennis shoes are probably like a 2-3
I figure work boots are probably a 5-6
I figure these ICON boots are a 7-8
I figure the AS boots are 8-9.

Am I pretty close in my estimates?

Depends on the work boot...  The only difference I see with these is the extra little ankle thing.

You can get work boots with a steel shank and a steel toe (Don't buy them if they don't say ANSI)...  Takes a lot more sliding to grind through steel.

Plus... If a cager gets too close, you won't hurt your toe putting a big f%$king dent in their SUV.  :mrgreen:

so you want to give up protection for comfort. stick with protection.

Take shoes with you.

Laces on bike boots are a bad thing, IMO.  Especially on a chain-driven bike.

Look into the Alpinestars Stunt boot. I've been using a pair for the last 9 months now and couldn't be happier. They work perfectly on the bike and are very decent on the street.

I can walk fine in my Roam, FWIW.  I can walk on them for trips and errands.  But for something where you plan ahead - why not take shoes with?  I keep street shoes at lab, and bring regular shoes with me when I'm going on a date*.

I've dated girls that wore those kind of boots with miniskirts...and they didnt own a bike.
