I know I've always loved my little 91' GS500E that I sold to a very "lucky" guy who now is looking for a ridding partner   so I've been looking for a bike so me and the ol' gs...... When traveling out in the boon-docks of Allaganey County Marlyland what do I run in to? No less a motorcycle for sale.

I conveniently had my pick up truck with me as well as a wad of cash. No time like the present to buy. HEHE anyways I did some snooping around looking at this and that inspecting the bike's current state.

Not a shabby platform I must admit. Solid and reliable. Only missing the lower 1/2 of the fairing but as a bonus it has brand [4miles on them] tires and polished wheels, The little nubs are still there in the center  Then there's CF this and that, short signals and it says OBO!! Halloo-la!

Wheel'n n dealing I come out with a deal of a lifetime only to look at the title and realize this is bike #140 of Yamaha's FZR600R Vance & Hines edition. It was mine..all mine...muhhhh muhhhh ha.

sniff sniff  she is missed. Atlease she won't get jelous

can't wait till the next gang ride

Having the title in hand now and tag on the rear I took it out for it's first vogage. HOLLY CRAP DUDE...Potentency is nothing. If you think the Weliyco is loud ? Then you anv't heard nuth'n yet!! There is no doubt that a "gas WOT gun" will pull the wheel up.

Ya ya I know the GS accelerates very nicely with a nice linear power curve. This FZR is very much the same way in being smooth and linear up to 6k rpm's. {havn't gotten above 5.5 really :o ]..I was getting on the highway {75mph} and babying it in 3ard gear and the bike was begging for more so much more input. I looked down and realize I was up at 80 and had 99% of the throttle letft to twist. I was scared to twist...Not yet I told myself.

Although my trips were short I know FIRST HAND I miss the confortable seat of the GS. I like the GS's fuel selector location better too, the choke on the handlebars is great.

Allso I have to do is:
Buy the lower fairings
install a relay switch
new plugs and jets [already stage 3 from factory  ]
and I'm going to have to work something out with a paint scheme [suggestions?]

That is alot of GS's in the same place at the same time. It makes me think there was a GStwin.com picnic and I wasn't invited. Or mabey it was lost in the mail?

o hhehehe that's the "Gang" that headed to Carlisle's bike show back in August.

While I"m thinking about it anyone know specs about this bike?
I've observed it's:
long wheelbase
deep deep gas tank
DOHC I4 motor
chain drive [#520??]
4speeds that I know of
speedo increments of 30mph

Wow, man. WOW! That bike looks NICE. What mechanical condition is it in? I'm so jealous! From the pictures you might want to replace the chain (it looks a little rusty). For color... so many options... I'd say a deep deep metalic blue with subtle white highlights, maybe some white pinstriping.

1991 manufactured..sold in 92...9k miles....dosn't leak oil, carbs are spotless from what I can see up in there...ya that's just surface rust on the chain...it was only on a couple of spots from where it sat?  for so long that only the bottom portion [closest to the ground] developed some rust.

FZR.. nice.. you got the one year where they changed the headlight. You can change that to a twin easy. Little advice from someone who has owned three of them.

Watch the transmission. The trans was never made robust enough to support the beef of that engine. If you shift into second from first, and it goes right through second into third about 10% of the time you are shifting.. STOP RIDING THE BIKE and get the trans checked. Riding it any further can cause major damage. That means that the trans is going the way of the dodo.

On the lighter side...

There are plenty of options and cheap mods as well as lots of parts floating about for it.

You can do the r1 tail conversion for nearly nothing. I did it. Looks great when done properly too.

The upper and lowers on any year can be mixed and matched to fit as the bolts are in the same place. Make sure you get that fairing stay on the top bolted down properly.. I had mine get all loose and nearly drop off the bike.

Check out the FZR ARCHIVES.  http://www.fzrarchives.com/ Much goodness to be had there.

Get a shorter tooth for a little more OOMPH in the low gears.

The bike is a bit heavy, but you can chop weight here and there. I usually ran it at 1/2 a tank.. it helps MUCHO.

Check the valves and compression on it. Those engines are known for compression and valve problems when beaten on with no maint done.

If your engine is good, locate a fzr400 and drop the 600 out of that puppy into it. The frame is the same sans ONE bolt and the fact that it weighs about 1/2 what the 600 frame weighs.

Look out for the holes in the road on this sucker, cause the rubber it sits on is really thin. This keeps the bike really nimble though, and you can keep up easy with the newer bikes in the canyons very easily.

I suggest the dunlop battlax bt-45s. They are great, and can still be had at a good price. There are other options, but just about everyone that is running that thing on the track is sporting the bt-45s.

They make an oil filter that is re-usable. I would suggest picking one up, even though it is a little more $$. Then you can empty it out and look inside to make sure that nothing is grinding up (like your trans...) and can catch it early before any damage does occur.

Get the yosh slipon.. or full system.. it sounds SOOOOOO good. Oh, and if you can.. find an exup system off a california model. It adds some extra power. Then you can just stick the yosh slipon on it.

oh.. that bike can top 110-120. It is a BEAST up there. Very comfortable even when you are not totally going prone. Just remember that the tires are skinny though.

Happy biking.. I still love the fizzer after all this time.

does this mean you're not interested in buying my bike anymore?   :dunno:
