Oil pan gasket question, need RTV?

My 93's pan drain plug was stripped, so I replaced with a new pan and seal and plug.  Now the pan seal leaks and I followed clymers torque specs.

I did not use any rtv, just the $4.80 pan seal I ordered from M.R. Cycle online.  Pan was brand new, and the surface was virgin clean.

I am running syn with moly oil 20-50 so even thicker than the 10W40 recommended.

Ideas/comments.  I'm dripping enough oil that long trips can wet the tire a tad.  Not good.

What a mess!!!

well yeah, I thought that, just wondered why clymer's didn't suggest it.  Curious if anyone else has "been there, done that"?

Silicone is for breast implants and fixing leaky toilets.

Seriously, AFAG will seal through oil, and it doesn't peel out like silicone.  Plus, it sticks to ANYTHING,  It's what we use in the business to assemble high-tolerance engine cases where there is metal-to-metal contact.  Can also be used as a gasket tack.   :thumb:
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

I've also got stripped threads and am planning on replacing the oil pan.  Clymer says to remove the engine from the frame to replace it.  Can I remove the pan with just removing the exhaust, and not removing the whole engine?

Remove exhaust, drain oil.  Lay bike on side (protected with padding of course), and then remove the 10 or so bolts on the pan.  Quick job :thumb:

No need to remove from frame!

I used Hylomar from Permatex.  It is a non-hardening gasket sealer made to be used with gaskets.

I don't know if it will fix your leak but that's what I used on all my case covers when putting together my Kat engine ... not one drop of oil so far.  I was even using the original gaskets that were there.  The advantage is that it will not harden and will allow easier disassembly later.

Paper gaskets will stick to the cover or engine case and then tear apart when you remove the cover.   RTV is also a pain to remove later.
