Has anyone put an '01 or later tail lamp on a pre '01? I know there is info on integrators and R1 tail light swaps, but I can't come up with anything about a straight swap.  I'm not looking to change the whole tail.
If someone in their infinite wisdom could please point me in the right direction....

no more different than installing an R1 taillight....maybe if you could find someone with an 01gs500 or 04+gs500F you could do a test swap to see if they fit. Or just hit a salvage yard or ebay to buy one used. if it doesnt work you can sell it on ebay.

Thats what I did to find the cb100xx clearalternatives lens fit the 01 (they since have them for the 04). I just bought it and chanced that I could make it work.

Your only problem will arise if the 01+ taillight is significantly wider or taller than the older version. If its not, you could probably fit it in the space for the 89-00 version.

this is just an educated guess...i think the 01 lamp is significantly wider and slightly taller...also with different angles.

here's an aproximate measurements of 01 lamp:

width: 6 6/8"
height: 3"

Thanks guys, and Jetswing thanks for taking the time on the measurements.  Height is not a problem but the width may be if it doesn't taper at the top.  I'm not afraid of cutting plastics but I think I'll shop for another solution.  I just want to freshen up the tail of my bike, it's the last part that seems to really date the bike.
