That's gotta be illegal...FIM has to have a regulation against gaining position if you are off of the normal racing surface (including if you are airborne!!!).  They've got a regulation against every other method of passing...

It was the 1996 CART race. It was the last lap of the race when Alex Zanardi pulled out this beast pass to steal the win from Brian Herta.

It's a classic pass

Even though since then Zanardi lost both of his legs, he is still racing. He is a very cool guy.

is that at Laguna Seca?  I'm guessing based solely on knowledge gained from playing various video games

Yea Zanardi ... yea ... This must have been the only legal at that time pass he did that whole season ... He is a prick ... an oily, smug, condescending prick ... he hurt himself bad yes, but that doesn't mean we forget the fact that he was an ass ... like say I got hit by a cab, that didn't make me any less argumentative ... see the same way ...
IMHO ... the decent guys in CART in the late 90's - Greg Moore, Vasser, Andretti, fittipaldi, Rahal and Herta who albeit a bit spineless was a gentleman to the core. Pity was the Fontana Crash that killed Greg Moore.
Cool.

Haha I pull that same move when I play Laguna Seca on GT4, I can't seem to ever slow myself down enough to not go off the road there, but hey, I get a pass out of it most of the time, so who cares.

Yes, that is the famous Corkscrew (turns 7,8,)
