The GS500/E/F as a Sport Bike

QuoteI'd classify bikes as follows

Cruiser: characterized by the low seat, feet placed far forward, swept back handlebars, leather saddlebags, etc. etc. many Harley's, Vulcans, Shadows

Touring: Goldwing, etc. includes the adventure Touring subclass

Naked: like a sport bike, but no fairings, generally more upright seating position, usually a big round headlight. The GS500E is a naked bike.

Sport bike: plastic fairings covering much of the engine, usually incorporates a small windscreen. Often lean forward more. The GS500F is a sport bike.

Don't forget dirt and dual-purpose motorcycles.

An upcoming fund-raising event here has been advertised as including "Harleys." I asked the person organizing it if she meant Harleys only or would other brands be allowed. She said "Cruisers only. No crotch rockets." She implied that sportbike riders have bad behavior. Who's insulted here, stereotyped sportbike riders or Harley riders who are no longer outlaws but model citizens?

I call it a standard or a Nekid...  'cause before the F, it was listed as a Standard...  But,  :dunno: it doesn't matter to me as long as no on calls it a Crotch Rocket.  There are cruisers that are more of a Rocket than the GS. :nana:  If someone calls it a Crotch Rocket, I say, "Don't you know that the GS stands for "Goes Slow."    Yeah, I know it's not true, but they don't.

The other one I get is, "How fast does that thing go?"  I tell them, "It'll do the speed limit."   :thumb:

Quote from: RoadstergalSo, if someone comes and steals my fairings, will I no longer have a sportbike?  Is my SVS only half the sportbike my GS500 is?

No classification system will be perfect.... that's just mine.  Many times you only describe bikes in terms of these types to non-bikers anyhow.  They say "what kind of bike did you get?" and you reply "cruiser" or "sport-bike". It gives them a mental picture.

Between riders you talk in models anyway.  "I just bought a new GS" to which we all reply "Ooooooooo".

Quote from: PhaedrusI consider the GS500 a sport bike because is is high revving, sporty looking, and has a 6 speed transmission. And yes it has a lot to do with how you ride it...but if you drive a 1989 Crown Victoria Stationwagon 85mph around corners, does that make it a sports car? Or if you drive a Corvette 30mph under the speed limit like a granny, does that mean it is no longer a sports car? =)

Maybe the GS500, if it were a car, would be a "Sport Compact"  (and not a "sports car").

My thoughts exactly.

Ever done 135-140mph in a Neon?  And before I get the BS flag my car is not stock.

Funny that my Car has a higher top speed than my bike

Is it a sports car?  No.   Have I beat sports cars?  Yes :)

A buddy once told me that riding a motorcycle is 20% skill + 20% bike + and the rest is all balls

Funniest name I was ever called on here "cap'n fast n' furious"

A guy once told me "having nitrous on your car is alot like dating a hot girl with a STD, your afraid to hit it because of what might happen."

Haha,  I think theres a lil more skill in that equasion.

I classify my GS F as an "entry level sport bike." But the reason i chose this bike was because it was more of a hybrid setup,... something that can be used everyday.

Nah I understand what you are saying, obviously, but why you repeated it numerous times within the same post, and what it was in response to, was what was unclear to me.  :thumb:

Exactly. I refer to both GSF and GSE as a Sport Standard. They are both sporty, but they are BOTH standards. The GSF might have fairings but it is still a standard bike with sporting character.

Why does this culture have an obsessive need to label and categorize every freakin thing??  That is the better question.
