Stalling Engine Solved

Hi,  This is to help anyone with a GS500 that won't keep running.

I recently upgraded from a GZ250 to a real bike, the GS500.  From the day I got it, it cut out when I pulled up in  traffic,  at lights and at junctions.  A small amount of throttle and adjusting my driving solved it - I didn't realise for a week or two that there was a serious problem.  This got worse and worse, it wouldn't start in the mornings - and the small amount of throttle I had to give it turned into 3/4000rpm while I was stationary.  Passing through neutral was a guaranteed way of stopping the engine  - I never had to use the ignition switch to kill the engine,  just take my hand of the throttle.   It was intermittent as well, but more often than not it cut out reguarly.  Initially it would start again quite easily but eventually I nearly killed the battery it took so long to restart each time.  I brought it to the dealer, and typically it behaved fine when I got there.  I made them take it from me and look it.

They did a compression test on the engine, and all seemed OK.  When I went to collect it, the bike showed it's true colours for them aswell.  So they took it back and stripped it down, they kept it two weeks and finally took off the 'rocker cover' ('scuse my poor terminology) and discovered that the valves were the problem - they sent them off twice to get 're-shimmed' and now she works like a dream.

Hope this might help someone else - it broke my heart!!!

Yea we know tight valves = a bike that runs like sheite ... That would be the first thing we tell people to look at if they have trouble starting, stalling, racing etc ... and its also the first thing we tell people to do after thy buy a used bike.
What actually catches my eye in your post though ... "sent it off to get it re shimmed twice" That is a freaking lie ... I can re shim in in 3 seconds flat (if the valve cover has been removed of course) in my driveway ... no need to send it anywhere, and twice must imply 2 valves needed them ??? That is normal, but sending them off isn't.
Cool.
