I bought these SM bars on ebay and installed them over the weekend using Pantablo's instructions, which were very good.

The bars really transform the character of the GS500F. They make the bike easier to turn and lean, and I think they add at least 15 horsepower. :)  I took a 180-mile trip Sunday; the bars took a little getting used to but overall were comfortable and fun to use.

The Cortech bags swallowed four (plastic) bags of groceries, including a loaf of bread and half-gallon of milk.

Lookin' good! Now you have to post a pic of your bike fully loaded!  :)

The cap slid down and disappeared under the tank when I was removing it. Maybe it will fall out one day or get found by some frazzled engine rebuilder 20 years from now.

By the way, on that 180-mile trip to Atlantic Beach, N.C., I got 59.6 mpg. :)

Going over the U.S. 17 bridge in New Bern was cool:

and the Atlantic Beach Causeway:

what?!

Nice I need a set of them bars. I never thought to look on Ebay for them.

dbNnc

Yes, they are the Type 2s. They were listed on ebay as being for an SV1000. As you can see, they fit perfectly and had the holes drilled for the nubs on the controls. The bars also had an extra hole; the SM Web site says SV1000s need an extra electrical switchgear hole and have a special part number for bars with it, or maybe the owner drilled it himself. The controls cover the extra hole, so no problem.

I lucked out; the first time I searched for "SM bars" I found these, and the auction was about to end.

Do you have any pictures of somebody sitting on it? I'd like to see how far forward you lean.

i'm guessing they want you to pay $160 then

no. as you tighten a screw from outside, what's inside the bar gets expended which secures the barend.
My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

That's so odd. I lost that exact same hex bolt cover on my bar clamps.

If I wasn't cheap and lazy I might go buy another one. Nice bars, by the way.

Used bars for a SV1000.

I just went to the site and noticed that the type 2 handlebars are 139 and 134 for the SV1000. http://www.suburban-machinery.com/sv650.htm

Just throwing it out there.

QuoteDuring the check out process you will be asked for the model year of your bike.
Owners of  2003 and newer SV650s do not need the turn signal kit and will be charged $5.00 less. ...  The SV1000 has a different right side electrical switchgear hole.
Order SV1000 specific bar, below.
No turn signal kit required

Probably due to the $5 turn-signal kit for the 650.
