A girl GP star?  Not very likely.  Not that there haven't been girls with success roadracing motorcycles--IIRC, several years ago some chic was winning races--and maybe even the championship--in the AMA 125 class.  It's just that chics hit the ceiling when they move up into the more competitive classes.  I posit a few reasons...

1) Talent pool.  There must be a hundred guys for every gal in racing.

2) Motivation.  Guys have more of a win or die attitude within their competitive nature (alpha male/winner takes all, where as females are more social and  equal as a class).  A woman who has made the field can garner as much attention by taking off her clothes for Playboy than for winning the race by pushing to the ragged edge.

3) I don't see a level playing field.  In GP classes (125 & 250cc) the racing weight advantage most chics would enjoy I believe is negated by the rulebook while the male advantage in upper body strength remains a factor.  A girl will have to prove that pure athletic prowress plays no role in roadracing.

Also, not crazy about the idea of racing motorcycles at such a tender age.  There's too much to lose, and, in this sport, there are some fates worse than dying.

I have a friend who is a very good driver and instructs in a professional racing school.  We've talked about this, because at the local/conference level, there are plenty of women, and they win regularly.  But you don't see that at the mega-professional level.  And we both see the same thing - the gals start driving in their 20s or 30s.  Practice can only take you so far at that age, and the guys who are making the big bucks driving professionally are the ones who were plopped into karts before they were old enough to legally drive on the street, and had literally their whole lives to practice.  And parents typically don't set girls up the same way.

So kudos to her parents, and if more would let their daughters have the opportunity to learn at an earlier age (11 isn't all that young if you look at motocross, where a lot of motorcycle racers get their start), we'll see them in the pro ranks.  But we have a LONG way to go.

There was a girl racing in the world 250GP class a couple of years ago she was German but don't know what happened to her she wasn't a front runner but was putting in a good effort.
Ability makes a good rider not gender ive raced girls on bikes I haven't been beaten yet but won't be worried if I am, only as much as being beaten by anyone :thumb:

How about the young lady who led the Indy 500 for a while last year?

The change has to be in the mindset of the corporations that fund the teams. It is a business, money driven, success oriented, commercially centered business. When the consumer of the racing product - television channels, advertisers, etc. want females, they will be there. Race fans buy the tickets, shirts, cups, hats, etc, but that is not the big money that keeps the industry rolling. Brand association is the real selling point.

When the public associates a brand with a female driver, the corner will turn. Otherwise it will be the status quo.

Who makes better astronauts? Females. They adapt to microgravity quicker and fewer get SAS (space adaptation sickness). They generally weigh less than males and consequently there are several successful females in motorcycle drag racing.

I enjoy watching a race, the sex of the driver/rider isn't important to me.
More power to the gals IMHO.  :thumb:

Not at all.  In fact, last week's 2-Wheel Tuesday ran a segment about women only trackdays.  Turns out these women preferred the  social atmosphere at such events in comparison to the more competitive-aggressive vibe typically found at mixed trackdays.   Different motivations, nature versus nurture, it doesn't matter, the talent pool for girl motorcycle racers isn't going to expand much as long as countless Internet porn sites keep hiring away all the warm bodies.

Well, Elana has been racing for some time, and is moving up in bike size consistantly.  Her last times were just off the pole for recent club races at Thunderhill.  A high profile female racer will break through at some time, and she seems to have the basic skills and drive thus far.  It will be interesting to see her on a big bike in a few years.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

im sure there is enough room in the world for both :)

dont see why it has to be black or white.  a Thinker with Curves, brain with bod? sounds like win win to me, but then, guess that would also hike the number of dumb Ugly folk too.
