So, Dave came up and poked around it some, and he's baffled, too.  It'll start, but it doesn't respond well to throttle and dies almost immediately.  Dave thought it was too rich, so we pulled the air filter.  It ran a touch longer before dying, methinks.  It looks like it's backfiring from the carbs - you get a little *pff* of a pop and the carbs jerk.

Stock airbox
Stock filter
Wileyco, unrestricted
Mains - up one size

It was running before with K&N, exhaust, many exhaust leaks, and 150 mains.  I jetted it down, put in the stock aribox, and took care of all of the leaks except for a very small one at the flange.  I checked the float levels, and the right was fine, but the left kept going out of whack, so I replaced the needle and seat, and it's at level now (all by the transparent-tube method).

Any ideas?  Dave says it needs beer.  He's beta-testing the beer on himself.

If you're sure it's not a carb issue, check for intake leaks after the carbs.

If you have been having carb issues, your spark plugs may be fouled..
I would go with fresh plugs (with correct gap of course) before I did anything else to the carbs..

My Katana did exactly what your describing and when I dug into it I found my choke cable had broken and the bike was being choked all the time.

Yeah, the next two things I'm going to try are plugs and putting the pod back in (sequentially); I really hope I still have those plugs from my old GS lying around.

Toss the new NGK's you have and drop in champions ... 809's I believe ...

Did you do any shimming of the needles when you re-jetted?

My bike did the backfiring through the carbs bit initially after I rejetted, and re-shimming the needle (lowering it in the slide by 1mm or so) solved the problem.

How do the plugs look?

Spark issue....plugs, coils or wires.

any results yet on the beta testing of the beer? I'd like to be in on the beta as well... (I won't tell you how old I am, then you can't get in trouble for giving me beer  :lol: )

When we put the stock airbox back in, my baby G didn't want to run either...we put the K&N back in, and he was good to go again..... well....at least until his carbs got dirty, filthy...
