OK...while searching for the right ride to get back on two wheels, I stumbled across the GS500f.  Not quite like my Gixxer750 I had back in the 90's, but I'd say it was just what I was looking for(and about all I could talk my wife into tolerating).  So now I am the owner of a "brand spankin new" '05.  

Well, I thought I could make it to my first payment without a scratch, but not to be.  Last night(11-02-05) on my way home from work, I caught the shadow of a large doe crossing the road.  I aimed for the doe's "aft", hoping it would not be there when I got to it.  Well, it worked.  I successfully missed hitting the unpopular end of a rather large doe....BUT...I did not see her fawn until it was too late, who was a few steps behind "Mom."  I barely had 1/2 a sec to grab some brake, and "thud."  Her head was introduced to my right turn signal, and then to the laces on my right boot.  As I was "testing" the brakes on my new bike, the little thing scampered to its feet and ran back into the trees with Mom, I would assume to get its lips around a few BC Powders.  You just never know what might happen on a dark, quiet, Georgia backroad.
*note*The top picture was taken just after I replaced my broken "I'm turnin right" thingy.  I thought it would be nice to get a few clean pics before I run into that kids 16 pt. daddy and break more than a turn signal.



See the sad clump of hair where my turn signal was meant to be.....?  Not to mention the "pretty" scratches down the side and the missing T-nut from the faring.  Not sure how THAT happened.

OH...One more thing....I highly recommend the integrated tail lights....WAY COOL !!!

At least the fawn has hopefully learned a valuable lesson...question authority (mom)...I mean, avoid road with lights (or is it 'avoid lights on road?'). Or, hopefully, the fawn wont take out another rider when it's full grown.

A friend of mine caught a deer's nose right in his shin...  Totally shattered both the nose and the shin.

Oh yeah...I am counting my lucky stars that it was not any worse.....I am just hoping "Dad" is not sitting on the side of the road looking for some revenge.....

My friend hit a deer in the middle of the day and rack himself and his bike up pretty good.  The deer did not survive.

We have a problem with deer here also.  It sounds like you just tried to dodge the deer instead of braking when you saw it.  When i see deer i drop my speed significantly for the next half mile, because they always travel in groups and move unpredictably.  Could have been bad for you.  Glad everything worked out though.

Ouch!  Ja, deer are pretty scary... glad you and Bambi came out of it with no worse.

UPDATE :  After noticing a few large, circiling birds, I went back to the sceen today and found Bambi about 50 yds back in the woods.  I did not think she would have survived a head injury such as that.  I am still not sure how the fairing screw popped out.  Coming home last night, I think I spent more time looking at the tree line than the road.  When it happened, it was QUICK.  It was about 2 1/2 sec from the time I first saw the mother until I hit the baby....and negotiation a turn at the same time.  I the words of the immortal Ron White...."Hunting?  I hit one in a mini van going 55 mph with the headlights on and the horn blaring.  Boy, thats an elusive creature."

I've never hit a deer, but I nearly broadsided a moose once.    

I've hit several deer in the past few years. One with an '89 Cavalier, one with an '86 K-car, 3 with a '97 Dodge Dakota, and now this one with the '02 Hyundai Accent. I also hit a coyote once with an '89 Ford Tempo.  

As for the latest 6 point buck with the Accent, I was driving down I-90 with my GF and some friends and hit the buck @ 70mph. It crinkled up the hood, broke the bumper and grille, part of the headlight assembly, broke the A/C condensor, and a radiator support bracket. In all, it was not as bad as I would have thought. It was a big buck @ 70mph. He jumped out, saw me, and froze. I slammed on the brakes and clipped him pretty good - but he was tall and the hyundai is small, so it mostly hit his legs and lower belly. he was FLYING up INTO THE AIR, and we continued under him. The safety switch hit (no airbags deploed though) which shut the car off, so I basically coasted off the thruway onto the shoulder.

The deer come back down into the lane and was hit by a Semi. And then about 5 seconds later by another Semi. He was drug down the highway about 40-50 feet and was basically in many, many peices. The largest part of his carcass was literally smoking; I assume fromthe intense heat of his body mixed with the firction of being drug mixed with the cool upstate NY autumn air.

The car is still at the shop; this happened last Wednesday. They did not total it out, since it was basically just body damage. The most expensive part being the hoodI am sure, the rest of it was either plastic or the A/C or support bracket.

Like I said, I've hit many deer - but this one did the most damage.

Anyways, glad you're alright. I personally haven't hit any deer thankfully, especially since they live right around our house in herds and come out every night. Our family has taken out numerous ones on the hill leading to our house, though. Thankfully all of those were hit by the 1990 F-150. Big trucks win, despite the deer's size.

I've seen people get seriously injured hitting deer like the one you took out. Especially the bucks, because they usually get hit, fall onto the hood and into the winshield, with their antlers going into the driver side area.

I just about got a doe Saturday night at about 7:30 pm.  I came to a complete stop and she crossed the road.  I waited and 2 more deer that I did not see crossed the road.  After that I went about 40 to 45 all the way home.  

Last week I was going to Walmart and about got a big body 6 pointer with my Neon.  I stopped the car and engaged the clutch and revved the engine and it fell in the road then got up and ran over and stood in a guys front yard.  Usually they hear the car coming and are already running from the road, my cars exhaust is pretty loud above 3500 rpm.

Er, If you people live out where there are deer all the time, do you think getting big brush guards or whatever they are called, would help? Not the wimpy ones, I mean the big steel ones mounted to the frame. With a nice winch to smack them too.
