One of my favorite .22's was my dad's ancient Remington pump action .22. He also had a pump action .35 Remington that was my first deer gun.  Personally I'm very partial to the 'flatter' shooting rifles. I've hunted with and gotten deer with a .243 pump action and a .270 lever action.  I've hunted with 30.06's, but i'm not as partial to them.  My absolute favorite small game guns are either my dad's single shot bolt action 4-10 or my my brothers side by side 4-10, which I think was made by a company called Fox.  That was the best rabbit gun I've ever used bar none.

Quote from: NarcissusAre there any shooters on GStwin? And out of those do any of you have lever-action rifles?

I have a lever-action .308 savage I use for hunting. Its a fun gun to shoot, very accurate, and one of the advantages over any bolt action I have seen is it comes with a flush mount clip.

QuoteHoly Crap, for some reason I thought Australia would have been more lax than that. In Canada you just need a license to aquire the firearm, don't need a reason. Because I'm only a minor I can only get a minor's non-restricted license, that is I can own most hunting rifles/shotguns, I just can't aquire them myself, buy ammo for them or go hunting alone with them. Its kinda lame but next year I can get a restricted firearms license so I can get a larger centerfire rifle, the Norinco M14 replica comes to mind

Things were easier till that nutter went off in Tasmania in around '96.

Then some other nutter went with some pistols around '02 and that stuffed it for pistol shooters. The gumment had a pistol buyback and made 9mm/.38 the largest cal you can have, except for BP muzzleloaders  :thumb: .

bluebellylint - Yeah the tube magazine are wicked, they just take a bit longer to reload then it takes to switch out a magazine or push some rounds in off a stripper clip. On the Norinco .22 lever-action its has a 15+1 capacity, what is it on the Savage? You probably read that I have a semi .22 Savage and its been awesome, I'd be really interested in a lever-action Savage.

bubba zanetti - I'm not too interested in pistols so I'm not sure whats available here, I know they're all pretty easy to aquire though. If I ever want one though, I should probably get it sooner rather than later cause some whack-job is bound to do something stupid with a bunch of converted and mag extended F/A pistols or something and get them put on the prohibited firearms list. So they bought them all back? As far as I can tell in Canada they never buy them back, just stop selling them, then the only way to aquire one is to get it passed down to you. So I'm sure someone has a WW2 vintage Bren gun around somewhere.

jake42 - Its amazing how many people have told me .410 is their favorite for small game. I'm buying a bargain hunter paper tomorrow to see whats in the area, I'll look for an .410's.

the .308 is quite a bit bigger gun than a .22 here are the bullet specs and a picture of the clip I was talking about it holds 4 + 1 in the chamber.

My father and I have quite a collection of guns.

The ruger 10/22 is a nice gun, bolt action I think is a 77/22??

I also have a Marlin 22 mag bolt action clip feed.

My dad had a lever action .357 Marlin and it was a sweet shooting gun.

In order to get any more guns we will have to clean out our vault and right now we like all the guns we have too much to get rid of them. :dunno:

The bolt action ruger is the 10/77... I have one, its one heck of an accurate plinker.  I had a 357 marlin at one time too, sweet shooting is right... and i was always quite suprized at how well that pistol round behaved coming out of a rifle.

I have always wanted a rem 700 in a .223 with a bull barrel and a good 20 power scope.  Cheap rounds, low recoil, very accurate and long range, and just plain fun to shoot.  I would love to go visit a prarie dog town :)

flyingbeagle-- I have that same Ruger 9mm, except mine is blued finish.  I need to get it fixed, it jams where the bullet slides up out of the clip and into the chamber.  Jams about once each clip, usually near the end of the clip.  Been that way since I bought it.  I wanted the Walther p99 (Bond, Jen Bond), but was poor and ended up with the Ruger.

Thanks!  I like the .223 better but you're right, the 7.62 is pretty cool too.  An AR is just fun to shoot no matter what caliber!  :thumb:

The Ruger P89 is a cool gun for the price, the one pictured is my second.  I'd check the clip spring if it jams towards the end of the clip, might be getting too weak to feed properly.  Another area to check is the ramp into the barrel.  If it's dirty that may cause feed problems, but it would be throughout the whole clip.

I wanted the Walther too, but ended up getting a Bersa.  Looks similar, but much cheaper.

Mine is a slightly older version and cost ~$125.  I'm not sure what they run for now.

What does it take to get a conceiled carry permit?

In Virginia... not much.

you have to be 21 years old, not a convicted felon, not convicted of domestic violence or any crimes involving a firearm, and never have been committed to a mental institution by a judge.

that's pretty much it.  You fill out the forms at the Clerk of the Court and in a few days the Judge signs the papers.   in some counties you have to take a short (1 day) safety course, but that's it.

In some states (MD and NJ for example) the requirements are so ridiculously strict that practically nobody can get one.  I always hated that about Maryland.

I lived in NJ until about a year ago and as was stated above obtaining a CCW permit  was very difficult.

Now I'm in DE and it's somewhat easier but you need letters of recommendation from 5 county residents and I don't know that many! (at least not well enough to ask for such a letter).

But: think long and hard about the implicatiions of carrying a firearm. Think about your personality. If you're the type to take offense quickly or seek trouble then you could be making a huge mistake. I'm all for self defense and as already mentioned I have firearms in my home  but I'm not 100% certain I'd want to carry even if I got the permit. Even in what you might consider a clear case of self defense shooting another person has lots of repercussions.

Let's hope none of us ever have to face that decision.
