I have a 1997 GS500E and I am wanting to buy an aftermarket fender eliminator kit to install on my bike.  Of course they don't make them for this bike so I am wondering if anyone else has installed one that is made for a different style and it worked without a whole bunch of work to fit.  Any help is appreciated.

Most everyone hear does the fenderectomy:

And if that isn't enough, try the Homemade Rear Signal Integrator How-To:

Yeah, except he broke his bike in the process ;) (BTW, is that mentioned in the HowTo: "this howto will give you a kickass tail end, for a low price, but your bike won't work any more.")

But, you had a bad battery, right?

Damn you, it was a bad battery!

You dont even need a kit, just pull the fender out.

Other than doing the graphics and painting the plastic piece, it took less than a day to do. You do need to be a bit creative when making pieces to mount the plate though.

For the blinkers all i had to do was drill a hole in the tabs for rear plastic. And I picked up a generic licence plate light from the local auto parts store and wired that into the rear running lights.

Thanks everyone for the responses.  I have already done the integrator because when I bought the bike the previous owner had put some cheap wannabe carbon fiber turn signals on and my buddy bought a GSXR 750 that included an uninstalled integrator.  Needless to say he liked his bike the way it was so he gave it to me FREE! The previous owner also did a crappy fenderectomy, hence me wanting to get rid of the fender.  I do like zukiGS500's fender and maybe I can get a buddy to help me work on something like that.

The piece I added is just a piece of acrylic. One end is wider and just sits on the frame and the other end I heated up with a propane torch and bent up. That and the blinkers were the easy part. The difficult part was making the bracket to flush mount the brake light. The bracket is a couple of L brackets atatched to the frame where the luggage bars used to be.

Are all the fenders interchangeable for all years of the GS?

It doesnt appear to have changed through the years, so It might, but someone would actually have to try it to give you a definite yes or no answer

I saw this a while ago and thougth it was awsome!!! thats such a fantastic idea!!!! common you've got to have more pictures, how well can you see the license plate from behind? do you have a siffer rear shock on the back so the tire doesn't hit the acrilic part you made?

fantastic work!!!!1

I do have a few more pictures here

But nothing that really shows any of the brackets I had to make. Next time im back home ill see if I remember to grab a few more pictures.

This is one of my favorite pictures though, cause it shows how nice and clean the back end looks.

Oh yeah, and the shock is stock, the plastic doesnt sit any lower than the fender did, so there is no clearance issues. But I do leave the shock at the stiffest setting most of the time so it keeps the back end up a little more. One officer (very nice lady I might add (46 in a 25 and only a written warning, yeah very nice, and kind of cute)), mentioned the plate was a tad difficult to see. But didnt say I had to move it or anything. But the next officer( or was it the 2 or 3rd after her), said it wasnt legal to have it there and he could have given me a ticket for it. But as long as you dont ride around like ass (like I do sometimes) you would be ok. I dont think they would pull you over just for the plate.
