So I bought a K&N filter because it was the same price as a stock one.

Is this thing going to be any better than the stock unit?

No...sorry...no one uses 'em here.  :(

Just kidding.  :nana:  My bike has a K&N.

I'd give you more info, but I'm a dunce, so search!

I get blamed for EVERYTHING around here!
:woohoo:

It will only really do you any good if you re-jet to add fuel to accomidate the additional airflow.  Running it alone will make the bike lean unless you have the type which uses the restrictor to keep the mixture even.  In that case the only real advantage of a K&N is the re-usable factor.

I just bought one of those today and im using the restrictor.
I toook the bike for a spin and I got cold, so I can't really comment on the quality of the air filter.

It was damned expensive! ($60), but I got it because 'it's the only filter you will ever need' (or so the box says), and I really hope I don't need to change it for the next 50,000 miles... it was a real pain to take the gas tank out of the way to put it in place. damn it!!!  :x

btw, this is my 1st air cleaner element change (4000mi on 05F), so I hope I don't have to touch it for a couple of years.

also, this filter was red, and the guy at the store says it's because it comes coated with oil  :dunno:
so I was like wtf! but anyway. the stealership has an air machine where you can test filters, and this one really worked (much better airflow), unless they tricked me.
Caturday yet?

If you're using a K&N filter with the restrictor on it, it still increases air flow at the upper end. Since the bike comes from the factory rich in the top end, the K&N with restrictor corrects that. Mine runs great on stock jetting and the K&N I've got in.

Yeah changing the air filter can be a pain in the ass - especially with a full tank of fuel -   . But you you still need to clean that K&N sometime within the next 50,000 miles..hehe. You won't have to buy another one, but you will need to eventually pull it out, clean it, and put it back in. I am not sure of the interval.  Anyone know? :dunno:

I replaced my air filter with another stock one at my 7,500 mark. It was about $28. I think next time I am going to get a K&N drop in, though.

I bought a K&N earlier this year and then was told to wait until i had time to rejet the bike to put it in, so I am waiting till I go home from Xmas to do it..
However, after reading this post I have a few questions, such as how to take of the take (it will be full) correctly? how do you stop the fuel from coming out while disconnecting the hose.
Also does the K&N come w/ a restrictor or do you have to get one seperate, how's that work? lol
Guess this is a newb questioin btu it's never come up for me before.

The restrictor is a little rubber/plastic thing that covers one end of the filter. It's got a big gaping hole in one end, and then it goes through the air filter and stops at the rubber thing covering the other hole.

To take the tank off you have to take off your seat and unbolt the tank from the frame. Then you've got to lift the tank up and turn the petcock to the "off" position with a screwdriver. After that you disconnect all the hoses and take the tank off.

It's easier than it sounds.

you mean I could have disconnected the hoses and take the tank off completely?  :x  :x

and yes. the restrictor is a piece of rubber that makes the big hole into a small hole  :P
personally, I would have called it 'hole reducer' or some other mundane name like that.

Actually, no, you don't have to take the tank completely off.

If you put an empty box next to the bike, you can move the tank around - with the hoses still connected - and rest it on the box next to the bike

I used my blue recycling bin to rest it on.

On both of mine the hoses wern't close to being long enough to do that. Not even close.
