Before I got my GS, the battery spilled acid on part of the frame, which got some visible surface rust and needs to be repainted.

I have an 01 (dark blue body/tank) with a silver frame.  Any ideas on where to get "similar enough" paint for the frame?  I'm not above spray painting that portion with stuff from walmart, but if color matched stuff available somewhere, i'd spring for that.  
I already have car-painting equipment and sandblasting stuff if needed.
Cheap is important (starving college student, and i'll need a rear tire soon, too)

I just tore down my bike to get the frame painted while I rebuild everything else [long story] but anyways I took the frame over to Maco [auto body shop] and they gave me a quote of $275 to paint the frame!!! :guns:  :guns:  still much better than the custom paint shop down town who wanted 1200....I went over to sherman williams and was able to special order this sealer kind of paint that they use in basements and other places where water/mosture collects. In a nutcase it seals the surface and prevents rust. It was $58 a gallon and it took 1/2 a gallon for my FZR frame and other misc. parts so ya a gallon is all you need but it came in a few different colors I chose blue but I know black was available and I would think silver would be too. If your ambitious I recomend to paint all of the frame and tape off anything that dosn't need painting. FYI if your rushed for time you could paint only the frame that you see [not the tail section].

I look back now and realize that if I had spend $275 at maco it would have been a crappy job because of all the weird angles, hard to get to spots and so forth via doing a spray paint job. Brush it on was so much better in this case.

HOWEVER YOU IF you decide to tackle something like the above. you WILL need to spend a weekend or alot of time preping the surface so the paint sticks and it looks decent.  This means chissiling away the road gunk, a bottle of simple green degreaser, sand paper then a priming agent then another very very light sanding then your ready for paint.

275 to paint your frame?

I have a quote from a guy here in town that does quality work to powdercoat my frame + subframe, bars, wheels, fork lowers, and numerous other little bits and pieces  for $275.  I just have to wait until he gets a couple of other orders for a flat black, and he'll do them all at once.

As if you need another opinion; Lowe's carries/carried a Rustoleum I used on the swing arm and a few places with acid damage. It is a little brighter than the original, but if you are stipping it down anyway... :dunno:  It is Rustoleum Professional, color Aluminum 7515.

Again, it is lighter/brighter than stock. If you want cheap, that will do it. If you want obsessive maniac restoration/custom ($$$) go powdercoat.  I topped it off with Duplicolor Clear Engine paint from Advanced Auto parts.

With any paint work, prep is super critical. Allowing it to cure is also important.
