Sure Badger, blame it on the GS500 FAQ

I agree with Jake D. Where is Kerry? We need a more conservative moderator like him to balance things out.  :thumb:

OK OK OK ive done my share of whoring. I havent visited the board in a while since I no longer have a GS, ive been settin up the bike for the track, workin and goin to school. In cali we dont have down time, especially when you dont have a car, lol. I ride all year round, and find the concept of putting the bike to "sleep" very disturbing.

I guess mainly is i noticed the same several people making the same basic threads over and over. An I Object, or why was soa nd so's thread locked. Or other random crap. I figured the O & E would be more for other non-MC related stuff, but also more goal oriented instead of pointless whoring. maybe im just imagining things.

I wouldnt say im back, nor that i ever left persay. Just decided to post after a long while.

BTW im looking to buy a KTM or XR600 thats street legal, hit me up :).

pre noobie? this IS a noobie board! and we advertise as so...

there always will be noobies...sometimes there will be more, sometimes there will be less.

as this site grows, there is going to be more voices. thus, there will be more post whores. that's just part of the growth. we should deal with the reality not try to revert back to what it was like 3 years ago.

one idea is to expand the forum so that people can post what ever they want and still not step on anyone's toes. as of now, there's only 2 forums that you can post on. the general discussion is strictly for motorcycle related stuff. that give just one forum to post everything else. no wonder people are complaining and crying. expand the forum give bored member a way to pass their time without getting criticized. after all, community is what this site is all about.

mea culpa... actually, I don't think I can be called the original source.. although I guess I probably had a hand in escalating it.. I don't know if it's winter, or what, but this and my other forum (clubstogie.com for any cigar smokers here), have become really edgy lately, jumping all over people.. where's the Good will towards man?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Mr.7

I think I might be guilty of starting the post whoring in the test area with my "Read this, it's importaint!" thread.

It seemed harmless at the time :)

I agree with JetSwing; we should add more forums that organize the topics more. My suggestions:
GS500 Main- a forum for GS related stuff
Other Motorcycle - other motorcycle tidbits and related stuff
Humor - a place for all our jokes and oddities
    Non-motorcycle stuff - the current O&E, I'd assume
Purchasing, Insurance, and Warranty - like the title says
Riding tips and techniques - help with general riding. Good for n00bs!
Meetings, events, rides - the get togethers
Classifieds - for sale by members
Vendors, discounts, and auctions - a place to post good deals at online stores, eBay stuff, etc...
    [/list:u]

    What's everyone else think?

I doubt a revamping of gstwin will happen  :P

But I'd also like to see a better Introductions forum.

Or maybe categories like General GS500, Maintenance and Repair, Accessories and Modifications, Off Topic / Odds and Ends, Regionals (like our current meet and greet section just more organized) and Member Introductions.

We can dream  :thumb:

sounds nice, but im assuming gstwin already cost a pretty good penny each month. doing that, although cool, would (IMO) up the costs somewhat :dunno:

Don't divide up the forums or create new ones.  That's a band-aid measure.  Instead, let's solve the issue at hand.

First off, it's winter.  Even if the roads are clear, many people won't ride in the winter because it's cold.  I don't subscribe to that idea, but many people do.  Riding for most people is an outlet, and a form of entertainment - not a form of transportation.  When they loose that outlet they vent their feelings, frustrations, and boredom elsewhere.  It just so happens that message boards like this one are the vent they're looking for.  This motorcycle board is not "all alone" in this aspect.

I've seen more than one motorcycle forum go down the shitter in the fall because there seemed to be a difference of opinion between the newer crowd and the older crowd.  Well, yeah....  The crowd that had been on the boards the longest tended to ride through the winter!  No real suprise there.  They had ridden enough to know that it was something that they wanted to do, and a little cold weather didn't phaze them.

Second, there's a large newbie showing here.  The GS is a good newb bike.  Let's be civil.  Remember your own "before-bike-times".  You didn't know which way to hit the shifter for 1st either...  If you don't want to help them, fine.  But don't give them the "search" response.  How long does it take to perform that search yourself and post a link to a relevant thread?  There's a saying in the foodservice business:  "The cup of coffee you serve a customer may be the 200th cup you've served this morning.  However, it may be the customer's first."

Third, I don't mind a little humor, or OT stuff.  Where I draw the line is creating threads simply for the purpose of creating threads.  Same thing for posting just for the sake of posting.  If you have something intelligent to add to the discussion, or have some humor you want to share, fine.  If you're just going to post something irrelevant to the discussion (humor is not necessarily irrelevant), then hold it back.

Forth, this place is a message board for the GS twin motorcycles.  It's a place for us to discuss our experiences, problems, etc.  Let's keep that in mind while we're here.  Also, let's keep in mind that this is not our house, this is John's house.  As a consequence, we must abide by his rules.  After all, he pays the bills.  Would you start a game of soccer in your friend's livingroom?  No, I didn't think so.  So let's not start a game of soccer in John's.

This board is the best resource for the best motorcycle ever built.  Let's keep it that way.   :thumb:

My only other word of advice is very simple: "Moderation in all things"
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

I do both if I have time.  But I tell them to search if I don't.  Teach a (wo)man to fish...

I was a noob once, too, but I read the manual before I even got on my first bike, and I do search.  It's just the best source of information, period, and it avoids both redundancy and the accessory issue of missing something important that might have been said before in the umpteenth iteration of the same information.

JetSwing

GeeP, don't get me started on the search thingy again :nono:

the problem is this...riding season coming to the end for many of us. so we don't have much to talk about our gs. consequently, more people are posting in odds n ends. this obviously is expected.

expanding the forum is inevitable. but i don't think these needs to be a dramatic change. for now, we can simply divide up the odds n ends into 2 sections:

    Odds n Ends - motorcycle related[/list:u]
      Odds n Ends - everything else[/list:u]

right now, a new post can't even stay on the first page for more than a couple of days. everything is getting pushed down. the key issue is there are so many variety of topics (and so many of them) are being posted in odds n ends, the forum becomes irreverent for a lot of people.

by dividing up the odds n ends, it will not only organize the discussion but make it more relevant for everyone.

actually, it is our house. yes, john built the house (thank you john!). it wasn't for himself but for the people. without us, there would not be this house. my point is is should be running the show, making all the rules. it's a community. john can put capable people in charge and let them and the people run the site and grow it to its full potential.
