Ugh - I think I might have missed the sparkplugs for the trees.  The NGKs they took out of my '04 F at the first service look great, so I'll try those once I'm done recharging the battery I drained.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Hmm, I see no mention of the pilot jets or mixture screw setting.  There's no telling what a DIY tuner may have gotten into and these are the elements which would affect idle and off-idle most.  Pilot jets should be the non-bleed type else it won't run right.

Roadstergal

I think the pilots are stock, but I should doublecheck.  Mixture screw is three turns out.

Well, Dave beat at it for a while, and it still belched foamy gas after about 30sec.  I pulled the carbs and checked the floats in a bucket of grotty water and tweaked the float height.  No go.  Then Srinath said the crankcase might be full of gassy oil - or oily gas - from the previous overflows, and the oil pump would be churning it all foamy... so we drained some awfully thin oil out (I think he'll be able to run his truck on it), refilled with new oil, and it ran all happily.  Okedokee, good to have that taken care of.

OK so its fixed now ???
Anyway ... buy a used bike and I do these 3 things right before I even start it up. Carbs - open, clean, rejet (usually I over cook it and have to jet it down in the new bikes I buy, but a GS is on the nose usually), oil and filter - change, and Valves adjusted ... before that the bike doesn't even get cranked over. Whihc is one reason I prefer to buy it non running ... so you know you have to do these 3 ... and heck get a $$$ break for the trouble.
BTW Davipu said it just had gas to just above the F mark on dip stick ... that was enough to foam up and gush out your valve cover ... well I guess I never tried to lube the motor with gasoline ... so what do I know ...
Cool.

It's running.. I still need to do the forks and paint the thing, but they aren't the devil like carbs are.

RVertigo

Forks?  What, new oil and seals?

I need to do something about mine...  I'm bottoming out more and more every day...

I think you'd bottom out these things...

The guy I got the bike from was about 250.  I just think they're tired...  So very tired.

You're just gonna mess it up when you drop it...  So, I say screw the new paint job...

aaronstj

Heheh.  It's RG putting in the hard work, not me.  She can paint it all she wants. :)

But...  Don't you want it sooner, rather than later?

Roadstergal

The paint job is the thing that will take the least amount of time.  I won't ask the price I'm asking without a new chain and at least a better job than the matte black crap on it right now.  I do have to take it for a spin this week to make sure it runs well throughout the range.
