Hi.  I saw that there were a few aussies hanging around the board, so I though it would pop in a question.
I recently found out that I will be in australia for a couple of weeks early next month and I am considering extending my stay to travel around a bit.  I am going to be in sydney.   I recently got the idea to maybe rent a motorcycle and go riding around outside of the city or whatever.  My question is: Is it worth it? Is there much to see in or around sydney (either with or w/o a motorcycle) that can be done in 5 or so days?
I have heard of people spending months traveling australia and new zealand but would it even be worth it for me to extend my stay by 5-7 days?

cheers

Sydney no - unless you're going to ride it to Queensland (which is really far) - if you were in Melbourne there's 500 km's of beautiful ocean road! About the only thing Sydney has going for it is the opera house. It WOULD, however, be an economical way to get around, but you'd better be careful - you could get into a SERIOUS accident riding on the other side of the road - you would not be used to that at all and that could be very confusing.

There is an Aprilia cafe in Sydney however, that's supposed to be really cool for motorcyclists - mebbe you should check in with those guys - I think they have a website off the regular Aprilia Australia site.

Feel free to email me!

Driving on the left isn't so bad... All you got to do is remember 'to the left, to the left' when making a turn.  Of course I was driving a car.  Making the mistake in a bike has the distinct possibility of putting you in the 'bonus danger' category.

Of course, the doctors speak some form of English in Australia  :) Unlike in Japan...  :o

Oh, right.  I forgot... The Japanese do speak better English, just that you'll never hear it come from their mouths, just to spite you. heh  ;)

The guys there maybe able to help you with a bike for a day trip ,with fellow riders ect.

As for maybe riding down the melbourne ,you would be lucky to have to ride more then 15 minutes on major  traffic roads from most bike hire shops ,then your heading down the freeway then on the coast road ,and just stay on the left ,easy .

The ride down to melbourne at a easy pace on the coast road would be 2 days ,with a few stops for picture's and spend a night .
You can ride to melbourne ,on the freeway ,in 10hrs.

Start a post on the above website you will get heaps of answers ,on hire bikes and places to see and things to do.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Roo's are not cute and fluffy ,when their  wild they stand up to 7 foot tall ,and can kill you with in minutes.

Just remember if your on a bike and crossing the sydney harbour bridge ,we stop the traffic at 5pm ,,so the kangaroo can cross the bridge to get to the feeding parks. :P

It's the red back spiders you got to watch ,they hide under the toilet set .
TRUE.

And them redbacks can be cranky bastards too, I know this cause I've got some down in the back shed.

The redbacks are fairly tame compared to the drop bears, they're the real killers.  :o

They used to be under the handles of the gym locker roller doors when I was in school - we used to draw straws to see who got to open the doors!

We were just talking about huntsmen yesterday too! Cute little furry HUGE ASS spiders (harmless) but creepy looking!

sorry I've been away, plenty of good roads in nsw but they are riding roads not that really scenic although there are spots.
As A few of us can tell you after last weekend the alpine regions are heavenly and as there is only snow for 5 months of the year riding up there is amazing but if your coming down under set your sites for tasmania thats the best riding it takes 21 hours by boat from sydney and you can ride the island in 4 days but is turn after turn hardly any straight parts thats why i like it but the run from melbourne to sydney is not that flash from the victorian boarder to sydney is good as is the great ocean road in victoria but they are a fair distance from one and other if you haven't left yet send a message and can fill you in some more :thumb:

I couldnt agree more, but nevertheless it sounds a bit fishy...

you must really take caution regarding the drop bears. For some reason they are really attracted by the sound of a passing motorcycle. The little buggers can rip apart a helmet and peel your skull open in a matter of seconds !!!! :x

there was a case recently in melb where a group of guys camped out over night for dirtbike riding the next day. A week later all they found was a pile of torn clothes and bones. They think that was done by the rare victorian white bellied drop bear. A slightly smaller version than the Northen Red footed drop bear but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in ferocity. :x
