I got a new family plan with cingular a few days ago, we used to have AT&T. I signed up on my phone for 50 text messages for $3 per month. I just found out that you get charged for text messages that you recieve, or take one away from your 50. I understand that you would get charged for sending, but recieving? That's ridiculase! What if some guy sends me 1000 text messages? There is no way to refuse them!

I really like text messaging. After seeing people use it in Japan, it makes sense to me. In the US, we get plenty of free minutes in our plan, whereas everywhere else, you pay for all outgoing calls (and they can be expensive!). And text messages cost 2/3 cents...

Going into voicemail every time a friend just wants to know how you're doing is pretty annoying. Also, text messaging is easier than talking/listening while in a bar or club. And, you can also use it to converse casually during the day, instead of having to have the person on the phone for 5-10 mins. Useful, but should not be overused!

I pay 30 GBP (52/53 bucks) per months for 400 minutes talk time and 50 texts, if I wanted I could have 400 texts and 50 mins but my thumb would drop off, no charge for anything incoming except voice calls received in another country. Charges for incoming txts sounds like highway robbery to me.

It's different for every carrier, AT&T used to be free, but now that cingular bought them out they have changed the rules if you have a cingular account. If your still using AT&T thru cingular then they are free. I didn't think this could be possible that they would charge you for incoming text's so I called them and that's right. I better not be getting charged for their ads I get thru text messages.

:o I haven't come close to that with TXTing, but my wife and I managed to use over 8,000 total minutes one month.

That was an expensive bill. :x

I send a lot of texts. It is great for when you are on a date with Girl #1 and you need to confrim plans with Girl #2.

The Sprint Fair and Flexable plan is great. If I go over my anytime minutes, it costs like $5 xtra. No worries. Plus I start with like 1000 anytime minutes.

YOu do this successfully? I've tried that, but I am not as slick as Jake D 8) I was once at this one girls house - I thought her and I had an "understanding" ;) so I was discreetly making plans with another for the next night. She found out and was super pissed. :x Apparently, we didn't have the same understanding :P BUT..

I used VOICE instead of TXT. *slaps forehead*

I don't have a cell phone, but I'm curious about how text messaging works. Do you type the text using the keypad on a telephone? How does the phone know you mean "hey" instead of "gdx"? How does it work for long messages, more than 2 or 3 words? What if you want to message a number?

RVertigo

You hit the button several times to get the letter you want... Like:

ABC2
DEF3

etc...
