California Emissions

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a California Emissins model GS500 and one from the other states is. I've got it running fairly well, but there is room for improvement. My local Suzuki factory mechanic says that they sometimes put softer cams and advance the ignition differently on the California models. I don't mind changing jets and a pipe, but I'm not sure I want to get into cams etc......

5 degree advance in CA bikes, 12 for others, the tank is different and has that air valve that does something, CA bikes have a charcoal cannister under the battery that is supposed to suck up fumes etc...Cams and the rest of it are the same. Disconnect the charcoal can and get the ignition advancer cut and re welded (Bob Broussard has some tips on that) and you have negated the CA epa crap.

I have a CA bike and I just ordered the V&H ignition advance.

What will that do to the timeing?

I removed my charcoal canister and just let the extra hose from the tank dangle down behind the batery and drain if need be.  I also read that the two conections to the carborator can just remain open or connect a short piece of hose to it.

Srinath, can you verify this.

Thanks,
Paul

Well the advancer (if you get it...V&H had been back ordered forever) will move the ignition from 5 degrees to 17 degrees. Now that seems like a lot but bear in mind the standard US bike has 12 and not 5 degrees. So It will work just fine. That advance is just to get the combustion right/better till ~3K or so. At 3K the bike will advance electronically to over 17 degrees in both US and CA bikes so no problem there.
Hoses dangling is fine too. I typically cut the hoses tight at the can so the gas spills are away from the motor in case.

Good luck getting the advancer. V&H don't make them anymore and dont have old stock of them. Everyone is backordered-indefinitely.

I just got an ignition advancer from Bob Broussard-he's MAKING them from the stock ones. Contact him for one. he'll need yours in exchange. I gave him my CA one and he sent me a CA one modified to advance 17 like it needs to for CA models but he can modify either CA or Non-CA ones. Just installed it this morning.

I'm looking to one day remove the emissions stuff-just so the bike looks lighter and so you can see through the frame...

Cool,
Motorcycle Acc Wherehouse shows due date of June 30th.  I have a back order pending now.  We shall wait and see.

I your oppinion, is this better than redrilling the plate and relocating it?

Paul

In your opinion, is this better than redrilling the plate and relocating it?

Paul

yes, I think it is better. The drilling is a stop gap measure in leiu of the rotor. using the rotor is the better way IMO. You can't beat the price.

Good luck getting the back order...

Does removing the CA charcoal cannister do anything for performance?

And what exactly decreases the CA tanks capacity by .5 gal or whatever?  Can they be "converted" to non-CA capacity?

Questions, questions.
