i got home too early for a saturday nite so i thought i'd mess around w/ photoshop and see what i could do with selective color. here are two examples. the first is completely desaturated and the second is partialy desaturated (background only obviously). not your typical rose photo. what do u think?

Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

I think they look awesome. It really brings the subject to life; excellent job.

I tried selective coloring in my Photoshop 4.0, but the layers are all different and I couldn't figure out how. I was using a tutorial for a later version - if you know how to do it old school style in 4, lemme know because I am too much of a dumbass to figure it out  :P

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Some people on GStwin get upset if you "pirate" a copy of the owner's manual

i havent used 4 in ages but im sure it can be done using the same method i have used.

first, take one of the RGB channels (whichever looks best) and select all and copy.  basically u just make a B&W copy of the image.

secondly, paste the B&W image over top of the color image as a layer.

thirdly, simply using your eraser you can erase parts of the B&W layer to reveal the color in the layer below!

for partial desaturation, change the opacity of the B&W layer as you see fit. in the second photo it was at about 75%.

hm..I'll have to try that when I get home. I was using a tutorial I found on Phototakers.com - which is a really good site by the way. I'm been lurking over there a lot trying to pick up some tidbits of information. You ought to head over there sometime; I am more out of my league at this point but you would fit right in. They do a lot of photo critiques, and there are many talented folks over there.  :thumb:

I've got CS2 :). But There's an option in mine called Selective Color. Any idea what it does? It's under the Adjustments bar.

selective color is used to modify the amount of each of the primary colors (cmyk). it only affacts the color you've selected.

basically it changes the tint of the color you've selected.

under image-adjust, there's an option for Hue/Saturation.  you can use that to turn down the saturation however much you want on your selection.

for selecting the area, i'd recommend first using the magic wand tool, then fine tuning that in quick mask mode, which allows you to paint or erase your selection area.

if the magic wand isn't working well for your image, you can use the shape tool to trace the outline of the area you want to select (set your new shape layer's opacity to 50% or so so you can see what you're tracing.

then, in the layers tool box, click the shapes tab, and by right clicking on the shape name you get the option to use the shape as a selection.

once you've got your selection mask fine tuned to your satisfaction, you can click the channels tab and save your selection as an alpha channel, so you can use it again at a later time.  or, you could use your selection to cut and paste the selected area onto a new layer.

It was kinda hard to do because of all the damn shadows and the lighting, but I think it was worth the 15 minutes.  :P  :dunno:
