Do any of you have motorcycle budgets?

ie.

a) money you set aside for accessories, gas, repairs, maintenance?
or
b) a fund for a new motorcycle or a fund pile for upgrades?

I am going to be devoid of a car payment next year (thank GOD) and I was just wondering if you "pay as you go" like I do now, or have stuff set aside specifically for your bike and its "needs" : )

I initially didn't budget.  I've been doing it recently, though, because it really adds up.

budgeting for motorcycle is sad...you finally realize how big of money pit your bike is  :(

so i rather not have a budget
My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

actually....I do the reverse....I budget out all the bills, gas, food, and fun $$....whatever's left over is my bike fund....or car fund.....or Ikea fund....depends on what month it is, and what I really want to buy....
PETE: It's four in the funking morning!

SHAUN: It's Saturday!

PETE: No, it's not. It's funking Sunday. And I've got to go to funking work in four funking hours 'cos every other funker in my funking department is funking ill! Now can you see why I'm SO FUNKING ANGRY?

ED: Funk, yeah!

I don't budget per se, but I do track spending fairly obsessively (with everything, not just the motorcycle) so I always know where the money is going and if I'm spending more on something than I have in the past.

Arcane

i don't budget at all.  if i need something, i buy it.  somehow, the money is always there.

+1. I don't budget anything. I don't use a check register, and I rarely keep receipts. I am pretty haphazard from a financial standpoint. If I don't have the money - I save for it or I don't get it at all. I pay my bills first, have auto deductions for my savings, and then whatever is left I put toward whatever it is I want. Is this the best way? No prolly not  :P
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

Yup. I budget. I have the car fund, the moto fund, the bills fund, the fun fund (which is usually too empty :P)...heck, I don't think I've missed a category.

or trackdays. my wife tracks all our spending and there are line items for motorcycle, which includes any maintenance items, aftermarket, tires, trackdays, etc. mines about $1800/yr.

Phaedrus and Arcane, the reason we budget is to know how much money we're spending and how we can save. Sure there's plenty of it there-like I ever actually check the budget for trackdays!-but its a good tool to plan our future. helps when you have kids...

I had the unfortunate experience in my youth of that not being true.  I suppose I'm overly obsessive about it these days as a result.

Definitely not...my wife is the same way.  I think she balances her accounts a couple times a year...and even then, only because I start giving her dirty looks.  Sometimes I think she does it just to try to give me a stroke..."Hmm...I hope this check doesn't bounce."  :x  It seems to work for her, so who am I to argue?

scratch

$40/month. Not including gas, chains, sprockets, sparkplugs, oil and oil filters.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

I buy what i need as it comes so far.  But I know there is a few things that I will wait till after the months bills are paid to get.  I guess i just pay bills first then the leftovers go to bike stuff, fun, random junk..
