How did I get my Frame Slider? This is how I made my own

It came to my attention that many of you are interented in how the heck I got the frame sliders. As you know, they don't make one for GS, so here  we go....
Actually, they are not actual frame sliders. I would say they are mostly just for the looks.  I have not tested the functionality of it yet.

One day, I decided to replace the bar-ends off of the handle and got couple of blue ones that matched the color of my bike. And of course I was left with the OEM (Black) bar ends when it was done. I didn't want to just throw it away so I came up with an idea.. If the bar ends are there to protect the bike/handle in case of a fall, then it should be able to protect the fairing too. So I decided to just simply remove the long screw off of the bike's fairing (one that is closest to your knee, my picture will help)
and replace it with the bar-end that I got off of my handle. So, here we go...

Here is the step by step direction:

1. Put the bike on center stand. Remove the bar end off of the handle, and you probably want to replace it with something cool. I got blue ones for mine like $12 a pair at local Suzuki shop. When you unscrew the bar ends out, you have to be careful not to loosen it too much. As you can see on the diagram, the nuts #13 and #14 are there to sqeeze the expander (rubber #12) as the screw #11 is screwed in. When the rubber is sqeezed by this nuts and the screw, it expands and this mechanism holds the bar ends in place. So, just unscrew enough to be able to pull everything out of the handle. Do it slow. If you lose the nut into the handle bar, just tilt the bike to one side and catch it on the other end. Don't ask how I know this.

2. Now, you should have two nuts(#13 and #14), expander #12, metal end #10, and a screw #11.

3. Now, simply unscrew the screw from the Fairing which is closest to your knee( use an Allen Wrench).

4. Now all I need to do is to screw the bar ends into the fairing without making any holes.

5. I am not sure if I used the nut #13 or not but basically I put things in this order: From In to Out
nut#14(inside the fairing)-fairing-expander#12(outside of the fairing)-metal bar(outside)-Screw #11(that goes thru all from out to in and reaches nut #14 at end)
here, I kept the expander, which is rubbery material between the fairing and the metal end #10 to protect the fairing from fairing to metal scratch.

6. Do the same on the other side.

It all took me like 5 minutes to do this and I believe it only works for the models with fairing on it. Those not faired models have nice cage guards anyway. Again, it looks pretty cool but not sure of the functionality. PM me if you need more help. It was fun doing it and didn't cost me any other than $12 for the new bar ends I wanted to get anyway.

If you hit hard enough, it will push your braket holding the fairing into your frame, pulling the plastic along with it. You're running the risk of cracking your plastics. The brackets that hold the fairing are really weak and won't be able to stand up to the force caused by a falling motorcycle. If they do, however, they could be seriously bent up which might warp your fairing. If it ever fell over you'd have to take off the fairing and check to see that the bracket underneath didn't sustain any damage.

I thought about that too and yes, I agree with you Alpha. I don't think it's strong enough other than just for the looks.  I wouldn't recommend it if you are planning on dropping your bike.   :(

I'm not sure that I understand the idea of "just for looks" frame sliders.  Personally, I think they "look" stupid.  Just my opinion.  :roll:  :lol:

BTW, The ones I got from Phae are similar but I got them in the event of a low speed drop...

I'm sorry man but those really won't help you much.  Keep looking into it, though...ingenuity can only lead to something ingenious.

If you look at frame sliders on bikes like the GSX-R, you'll see that there is a hefty chunk of frame made for frame sliders that they bolt to.  That's the $10K issue with frame sliders on the GS - the frame isn't made for them.

The GS was designed before the idea of frame sliders (other than crash bars) had been thought of.

I had pondered at one time that you might be able to run a long threaded rod or bolt under the frame, between the engine and carbs. Attach plastic sliders to either end. The problem then is how to attach this slider assembly to the bike where it can safely obsorb crash damage. You could weld nuts to the underside of the frame where it would go. That way all of the stress wasn't concentrated on one point, on one side of the frame.  But if you were going to do that, it would be easier to just drill a hole in the center of frame and attach the slider on with a fat headed bolt from the inside.  Especally if you were trying to avoid cutting fairings...

OK I have come up with idea and its getting implemented in the next week ... Its comming ... $60 for 2 pointers, $80 for 3 and $10 for sliders ... and no buying sliders only ... wont work ... anyway ...
Here is the thing ... I'll make 20 or 70 ... nothing inbetween ... I have to buy bolts that are like 13 inches long ... and they have to be bought by the box of 100 ... I have 1/2 the box from the earlier run where I was dumb enough to have 50 left over ... so this run, I'll make and send it out with them, but more will have to be from a new box of 100 ... so 50 more ... The thing is ... 70 will get more attention from the laser guys ... 20, we get dropped to the ass end of the pile ...

Bar-ends aren't really a good material to use.  You need to be looking for a hard eurethane or rubber with a no thicker than 1/4" bolt through it so that it will absorb more of the impact.

Using a hard substance will put more stress on the mount and be more likely to break.

I noticed that you lowered your bike by 2 inches, too. Does it still pop up on the centerstand okay or did you have to modify that, too? How about the sidestand? Does it still lean a good amount? I'm short and would like my feet to be planted on the ground a bit better so I was considering new dogbones to drop me a couple of inches.

As you can read from above thread, using the centerstand is very difficult once your bike is lowered. I'm thinking about just taking it off although I have not had any problems while leaning yet. The sidestand works great and the bike is still very stable.  My next purchase will be getting a pitbull rear stand for an oil change and stuff though. I have short legs  :x  and it made the riding a lot more comfortable when it was lowered 2 inches. I strongly recommend it if you have short legs too. It was like day and night difference for me, going from tip toeing to touching the ground flat footed. Makes it much easier especially when you are walking the bike reverse when parking and stuff. Do not worry about the critics everyone likes something different. I think you have a good eye for customizing / using spares . It is free ,looks good [superstar racer ] and moderate protection. I will [ make it so ] on the 05 F . The peons will not know the difference anyway. I think I will paint mine red.
