Frame differences?

Just needed to know if there are any differences in the frames between the years? I don't think there were, I did a search and someone mentioned some bracket mounting holes, but didn't mention if they were referring to possibly the fairing brackets for the "F" model.

I have a '02 I need to do a frame swap on and just wanted to verify that any '02 or earlier frame will work without problems. Are the newer ones the same too?

I think the '02 is closer to the '01 and new frames than the pre-01 older frames. Surely there is a GSTwin member around Hotlanta that can get with you for an inspection?

God save us from LED turn signal mods!

1990 GS running, 1990 GS work-in-progress, 1990 basket case.
The trend here is entropy

IIRC...
89-00 same structuraly, all silver except 96 which was gray.
01-02 different subframe mounts for plastics than 89-00, all silver.
04+ same as 01-02 but has mount for fairings and stay, all black.

Not sure about 03 since it was not made in the US.
Common sense in not very common.

Thanks for the reply guys!! :thumb:

dgyver, about the subframe mounts for the pre-01, is this something that can be modified to fit, if I have the '02 rear plastics? The subframe is a solid piece that can't be removed from the frame on a GS, correct?

Does anyone know if the seat mounting is the same? The seat style is different (older bikes have the extension up the tank) but I'm thinking of adapting an older seat pan to my '01.

I'm fairly ertain the mounting points are different. Plus to get the body work is different, so the lines of the seats won't match up.

Someone has done an "upgrade" with 01+ plastics on a 89-00. Do not recall who. Pics were posted.

As I recall, the main structure of the subframe is the same but the bracket to mount the seat latch may have moved a little, not much. There are a couple of additional brackets to support the seat plastics. They are not on the tank like the 89-00. Check out the parts diagrams from //www.bikebandit.com //www.Ronayers.com or //www.mrcycles.com, you can get an idea of the differences.

fyi....I do not have a 01+ frame, just 89-00 frames. I do have the plastics, tanks, and seats from both years.
