Got dirt bike - Annie crashes hard

The new dirt bike got a workout yesterday.  3 crashes with the worst being the second where Anne went over the bars and flopped on her side.  Bruised ribs, elbow and thigh.  She's in agony now, but says she's up for some weekend riding.  That's my girl  :thumb:

Yami gear shifter is a perfect match so that's fixed.  The brake lever has been unbent.  All in all it crashed really well.  The plastics got scratched up but didn't break.

That sucks, glad to hear she is OK though. A wise man once said that half the fun of having a dirt bike is crashing it  :thumb:
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

She's better this morning.  Last night she couldn't sit down or get up so she plopped on the couch, vegged for a while then got to bed.  I was suspecting a cracked rib because coughing, blowing her nose, or taking a deep breath caused pain.  But this morning she said the rest did her some good and she's gone to work.  Funny thing though is she says all kinds of other muscles now ache!  No surprise

My buddy who has been teaching her to ride said she hit a hoop way too fast and adding 5 inch deep soft sand at the start of the next one brought her to a quick stop.  He should have led because he knows the trails well, but wanted to see her riding style to give her pointers.  He said she flew through a soft sandy area that he almost biffed on  :o  When she was off nursing her wounds he said she's awful fast for a beginner -"she rides like a kid -no fear." was his comment.  She has fear now

Sounds as though she's doing great! If she's still in a LOT of pain Friday or Saturday, maybe she *should* rest a bit for the weekend.... we can injure ourselves pretty badly even adding a small injury to one that's already there...

man, dirt bikes are prone to massive amounts of injuries...all my friends that bought dirt bikes have injured themselves. I think crashing is inherant (sp?) to dirtbikes more than street bikes. glad you're both having fun though. how was the trip out this way?

You have no idea. Check it out.

I sometimes feel like taking a sledge hammer in my car so that I can hit curbs I deem unworthy.

Dirt bikes on the street?  Very dangerous!

Dirt bike rider critically injured in Shawnee wreck
By BENITA Y. WILLIAMS
The Kansas City Star

A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after his dirt bike collided with a car early today.
The crash occurred between 1:30 and 2 a.m. as Joseph J. Blessington of Merriam was riding the bike eastbound on 75th Street in Shawnee. Police Capt. Ron Copeland said the bike smashed into the side of a 1998 Ford Escort that was pulling out of a Quicktrip store just west of Switzer Road.
Copeland said the dirt bike was not equipped with the proper license or lights for street use and Blessington was not wearing a helmet. No charges have been filed. Police continue to investigate the crash.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

bah...that could have, and has, just as easily read:

Dirtbikes have their place but a lot are made specifically to share the roads, though.  Riding is dangerous in particular.  The danger is inversely proportional to the intellegence of the rider and surrounding people.  Has nothing to do with the ride.

The trip to get the bike was long but almost no traffic jams so it was about as fast as possible.  I was pooped after leaving at 4:15am and returning at 4:45pm.

Yes it does seem that people get hurt perpetually riding dirt.  Riding within your skill level helps a lot.  I took the bike out 2 days ago.  Never rode dirt before and was flying -my experienced buddy couldn't believe how fast I was going through sandy, hoopy single track -especially after he rode my bike and realized the suspension is crap.  I almost lost it 3 times and knew if I biffed at those speeds I'd be hurt bad.  I ratcheted it down after about 45 minutes of getting beaten up.  next time I'm taking trails slower.  I was lucky.  BUT dirt riding is fun!  (my body aches from head to toe  )

I repleced the fork oil with 5w fork oil to inprove the reaction.  This may or may not help -we'll see.  Really this bike is a trainer and nothing more -to be ridden and destroyed before deciding if we want to drop $3500 on a cr230.

Anne is better.  The rib is still very sore, but better a little bit.  She opting out of riding this weekend and hoping she's healed up for next weekend.  The knee protectors paid for themselves in the crash -totally banged up.  The helmet paid for itself in the crashes.  She needs a chest protector, despite her resistance to using one this crash taught her a valuable lesson.

yea, pantablo i agree with you on that one. i think that db's are really prone to injury because you end up putting more stress on your body with the dirt AND some people do not take into account that dirt can be pretty friggen hard when you hit it.

my buddy just broke his ankle two days ago on his brand new xmas present.

i raced in florida for years, i broke many bones and got many a scrape and bruse.... my mom even took my bike away eventually and made me get a 125cc sprint shifter kart.. i was pretty upset.. but those karts ARE hella fast and fun.
