Hey everyone,

I have a 1999 GS500E and after storing it last season when I went to start her up she wouldn't start.  Finally she started (but not easily) with the choke full on but after warming up the engine when I close the choke the engine dies.

Anyone have an idea why that would happen?

Is it a carb problem?  Do you think a good cleaning would fix the problem?

Yeah, it is most likley a carb problem.  They gum up pretty easily.  Here is a link for the carb rebuild how to if you don't have a manual http://www.gstwin.com/carb_work.htm

I had a similar issue with my 98' when I first got it. I'd start it with the choke on full, then I'd try to slowly come off the choke once it had warmed up and it'd die. I played with the choke a bit but no luck. So I cleaned the carbs and now it works ok. I can't slowly come off the choke though. I have full choke until its revving at about 5k at idle, then I have to quickly turn off the choke until its completely off. If I try to come off it slowly, it'll die. But my bike isn't tuned very well, and I'm just too lazy to get everything going well  :lol:

You might want to go to Target or an Auto Supply place and buy a fuel additive called TECHRON.  I have had very good success with it cleaning out carbs.

There are two different types - a full strenght version which runs about $10.00 per bottle and a wattered down version which goes for about $5.00 per bottle.

You want the full strenght version but add only 1/4 of the can to a full tank of fuel. You'll want to run that entire tank out and then do it all over again.
