I am in desperate need of new bars for my 92 gs. I really want the suburban machinery type 1 but will settle for anything that works. I was wondering if sv650 bars will fit on my gs? if not, does anyone have any compatible bars laying around that I could buy?

sv bars should fit fine, given the S-M bars fit perfectly. you can also buy replacement bars at http://store.yahoo.com/azmotorsports/

look at drag bars (photo of one in wall of fame-maybe 2nd page?), superbike bars (lower than stock but not as much as a flat drag bar) or stock replacements. Also look to www.flandersco.com for bars. you want 7/8" diameter bars with I think its 6+" at center for the clamps. Flanders has the dimensions of the stock bars.

Wow Pablo thanks for the link, those bars are cheap on there!!! Anyways, I am thinking about the superbike bars. Just wandering though, what bars would give me the feel of clip-ons?

I pretty much preach this, but if you want the feel/look of clip-ons, get some clubman bars from Bikemaster (or any other manufacturer that makes that style bars).  The S-M bars are also called clubmans, but they're not the ones I'm talking about.  The clubmans look totaly different than the S-M bars.  Also, if you get the clubmans you'll need to pick up a set of handle bar risers.  I used a set of 1'' risers.  Otherwise the bars will not clear the top of the trees and won't fit correctly.  Check out the bars though, they're pretty cool.

Check out this link to see what they look like http://shop.store.yahoo.com/azmotorsports/knclubhanbla.html.  Click on the pic. of all the bars (the clubmans are marked "A".

I mostly agree with John L. Clubman bars are the only way to come close to clip ons without actually having them. However, once you factor in the risers the cost of the 'inexpensive' flanders or bikemaster clubmans approach the cost of the S-M bars.

IMO, the S-M bars look more modern. The clubmans look more appropriate (to me) on older cafe racers. They won't fit on GS without the bar risers also.

Check the prices for both setups to decide.

Pablo's right about the cost of the clubmans + risers being pretty close to the S-M bars.  Risers can be pretty expensive.  Also, I took a look at the S-M bars on a GS and they do look like they would give sort of a "clip-ons" type feel to the bike.

Clubmans were more traditionally put on older bikes (a la the cafe racer), however I have them on my GS and they look super cool.  I've got nothing but compliments on them thus far.  Also they lean you forward quite a bit when compared to stock, but the S-M's look like they would also.

I would say that it's mostly your choice.  S-M and the clubmans w/risers are going to run you some bucks.  If your looking for economy I'd go with some draggers with a little pullback on the ends.  If your willing to spend the bucks either of the other two options would look great.  Personally, I wouldn't trade my clubmans for the world, but then again I am more of an old-schooler.
