hello everyone im in need of some assistance.
im a 19 yr old 6'5 200 pounds. and i am looking into buying a gs500. i was wondering if i would be to tall for this bike?

also- my family is really into harley davidsons-dad brother uncles grandparents and so on. almost like a family tradition. my dad would much rather me get a harley then a "crotch rocket" as he calls them because he is afraid i will be stupid on it. but i dont have the money for a harley! what do u guys suggest i do?

ps. im looking into a gs 500 e wihtout the fairings.

There are some riders your height or close to your height with GS 500s.

You know, if you can't afford a Harley, then don't get one.   Unless somebody is going to give you some money?  Otherwise it shouldn't be an issue. 

The people here will tell you, if you're 19, you're better off on a GS.  You'll drop it at least once.  It seems everybody does.  It will be cheaper to fix than a hog. 

Plus, you'll learn to ride on a GS.  In a couple years you'll have some more scratch and you can get a Harley then.

My advice: wait until you are like retired to get a Harley.

....what Jake D said....but also remember, that it's your decision what you ride....and the GS is not a "crotch rocket"....it's more like a "cafe racer"....

ya those are my thoughts exactly. but my mom would accept a harley cause she doesnt know anything about bikes and thinks there safe. another thing my dad coninues to say is "its a deathrap" blah blah blah.

If your father thinks it's any harder to hurt yourself on a Cruiser, he's way wrong...  In fact, I would say it's easy to avoid hurting yourself on a GS because it's so light and maneuverable.

I've ridden a light cruiser (Suzuki S40) and I have to say the GS is much easier to ride, much easier to corner, and much easier to avoid things in the road...  With that said, the S40 is much more comfortable...  And it's still fun to ride on straight roads at 25 MPH...  I don't think the GS gets fun until you're on a twisty road or going at least 50 (read 70)...

Harleys are for old label conscious people with too much time and money.


Get a motorcycle, learn to ride, and have lots of fun...  I think a naked GS is the perfect bike to ride for learning, commuting, flicking, racing, and having too much fun.

...it's ok...I deal with a similar mentality from my father....except he's in BMW bikes....always has been....he says my zook's are nice....but they don't compare to the beemers (bimmers?)....course, I've ridden his R850r....it's nice if you're going in a straight line....but it has the worst turning manners I've ever seen....

One thing to be said about the difference in the seating position is that on the GS you will be in more of a 'control' position, maybe 'more of a controlling position' is what I'm trying to say.  It may make you want to go faster, and faster in turns.  So your dad is partially right.  It's like getting into a sportscar vs. a pickup truck.  In the sportscar you're going to want to go faster.
Your father maybe more afraid that you'll like riding it more (going faster and all that).
It is also my opinion that you will learn how to ride better on the GS.  Just like you learn to ride better on a dirtbike (something small and light).
