someone on the local board is organizing a new/newer rider group ride and I thought I'd pass it along.

Newbie/Relaxed ACH Ride, March 11th, 9am

Saturday, Marth 11th, 9am @ the Shell station at the base of the hill. We'll go over canyon riding basics, ride to the rose bowl for some parking lot paactice then around 11am head up ACH to Nuke's Ranch for brunch and then head back down.

Shell Station
4530 Angeles Crest Hwy
La Canada Fltrdg, CA
(818) 790-3836

This will be a speed limit or lower ride! If you want to race the mountain then go for it, but in your own group. The name of the game will be safety and introduction of the newer riders to canyon riding. Ride your own pace, there are no trophies, no podium, and no pressure.

If we get more than about 20 people, I'll break it into two groups. Comfortable and newer. And for those of you who've never ridden canyons before, don't worry, we will go as slow as you need to in order to make it safely up the mountain (and yes I mean if I have to ride behind you all the way up and down the hill at 30mph, I will without hesitation). The only thing I ask is that you know how to control your bike in a safe fasion.

I'll be bringing water for those who would like to remain hydrated. ACH to AFH to Big T to ACH to Nuke's sound good? Or is ACH to Nuke's open?

Who's up to ride the mountain?

This sounds excellent.  I'm in. :thumb:

**edit: barring, of course, epic snowfall, in which case I will be on the hill.  Ya right.

It's been a while since I've done a group ride on Angeles Crest...I'll have to stick this on the calendar barring any crazy snow up on the crest...right now, I think the upper half is closed... :thumb:

upper half has been closed for a long time due to the road being washed away (from the rain a year or couple years ago).

We are still doing parking lot practice tomorrow (Mar 4th) and meeting at the Shell @ 9am. No ride though. At around 9:30 we'll be heading over to the Rose Bowl for some practice.

Since kekoa seems anxious to start it, but probably won't show, I'll start it first. :laughing Hope to see you out there man!

NEW DATE: Saturday, Marth 11th, 10am @ the Shell station at the base of the hill. We'll go over canyon riding basics around 10:15 then head up to Nuke's Ranch for brunch and then head back down.

Any more experienced volunteers who want to help organize/stagger through the group would be extremely appreciated. If we run one group, I would like 2 leads and 2 tails; otherwise 1 lead and 1 tail per group. I'll be bringing water for those who would like to remain hydrated. Nice...i might be able to make it now. Tomorrow would've been good for me if my bike hadn't broken down on me on the 91 a few days ago. i got no fuel getting to my carbs. i'm gonna break it down tomorrow and see where the clog is. From what i've read on here...sounds like a common problem.

socalsportbikes.info has the rides forum where you should keep an eye out for the upcoming ride. they also do "skillzday" rides, where they go to a parking lot and practice drills, culminating in some people learning to drag a knee...

Be careful if you start mixing up the "skillz days" and the knee dragging stuff. I've only been to one skillz day, but from what I've seen there is definitely a divide between the skillz day and the knee draggers. Some of the folks on socalsportbikes think the knee dragging is helpful, while others think it's irresponsible/unnecessary/too advanced. (I don't know enough either way.) The skillz days are great for practicing general riding skills. The whole point is to be smooth and in control of your bike, which helps if you are obessed with going fast or just want to be a better rider.

Damnit Pablo! How did I miss this?! Do another one or I'll have to rock back and forth in a corner repeating, "mommy". Until that day comes again I'll just have to cry myself to sleep... one sad night after another. :( :thumb:
