I out bid somebody out there for this tach/speedo on Ebay. I got it for $100.00  8)

The transition from electric tach to mechanical was a bit tricky, but STARWALT's site helped a bunch.
(http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&groupid=41309&ck=)  THanks MAN!!

I was going for a "how to" but accidently lost the pics. If anyone is interested I am willing to tear it apart and take pics.

Tell me what ya think.

Aw man!! I NEEDED THOSE!!! You're so lucky!! I messed up my tach when I crashed at the track, which bent the bracket and the plastic guage bucket thing. Maaaan... you're so damn lucky.

Not to thread jack, but how do you like the Z1000?

You Are Welcome! If I ever get some decent disk space in cyberspace, I'll post more stuff. I've gots LOTS of ideas.

How did my meager postings help you? (I don't have any instructions on how to convert to an electric tach.  :dunno_white:)

Nice job though! Snazzy looking bike and the black/chrome gives it great contrast.

That year/color combo is on my top 5 favorite GS looks. Hey, there's another idea. A color catalog of GS's from 89 to current.

My faves (in not any particular order)
89 - Black with red tape set
90 - Red with white/charcoal tape set (like my rebuild)
99 - Yellow with black tape set (like above)
04 - Yellow nuff' said
05 or 06 Black with red/silver tape set

Ahhh yes....now the use of my quote in your sig makes sense.
Common sense in not very common.

dgyver

btw....which wire did you use for the signal to the tach?

dgyver - no wires, I used the guts of the mechanical 99 tach.

Starwalt - Not to be a brown nose, but your site is by far the best gs mod site I have found to date. And that is without written instruction!!!  Meager?  Man, you did more with just pics than most do with half a web page.
I hope to see more of your Ideas.  I am going to paint my brakes next, A La Starwalt. :icon_mrgreen:

When I bought the tach I had no clue the 04 tach was electric.
Because of the metal ring being nonremoveable, I thought I would have to use the 99' tach and the 04 speedo.
Then I remembered your site and all the pics. You showed how to take apart and test a GS tach(mechanical) without damaging the cosmetic integrity.

I did tweek it abit though.  I left about a half an inch "lip" to hold onto the white "cup" (tach housing) and used a small black screw on the opposite end. (almost unnoticable- try to find it in the pics)

Thanks man,  I hope this thread encourages others to visit your site and also to post their mods, as well.

amatuer in comparison but I hope to contribute.

BTW- I love the yellow on black and wouldn't have it anyother way.

You are too kind. I didn't invent the idea of painted calipers, but I wish I had a patent on it! The Duplicolor Engine paint I used was a little brittle and chipping was a minor issue on some places of the "Y" shaped rear caliper holder. I may try a caliper paint kit next time. A more flexible epoxy paint may be the way to go. Regardless, clear coat several times to resist brake fluid and other stuff.

I currently have two front and one rear caliper in the stripping/cleaning phase. They will also be painted and are targeted for the Ezuki project.

I need to  sketch something up to clarify what it is I file away on the gauges, but you seemed to come up with a solution anyway. The goal is to remove just the 90 corner of the metal that wraps around the lip of the white plastic housing. That leaves the curved portion of the ring and the housing intact. I reinstall with black (or in your case, clear would do) RTV. Use just enough to hold things together and give a splash seal.

The tach went electric in 03/04. Models with the "new" engine control unit have electric tachs. I wondered if you stayed with the mechanical tach and swapped meter faces. Again, a great job.  :thumb:

Sharing knowledge and experience is what a place like GSTwin is all about. That's why I want more cyber drive space.
