i own a 2005 gs500f (blue) the bike has a little rust problem so the bike is going into the
shop to get it fixed. i was wondering since its going into the shop i wanted to get the signals changed. i hate the long orange signals. should i pay those guyz to do it? or is it easy for me to do if myself? i also really had where the license plate sits. need some opinions and pics. Thanks guyz

Doing the blinkers is a snap, all you really need are some wire cutters and maybe some butt connectors( some blinkers will have the connectors on them that you can use)

that's where i elimanated almost all of the fender, moved the license plate bracket up and put on flush mounts. any q's ask

OK.. wait.. you have a rust problem on a 05?  I have a 95 and no rust... Where is it? what caused it and what is the dealer gonna do to fix it?

well i did work with wirecutters and all that when i changed my car seats into power seats. so i have
somewhat experience. is there any how-to on what wires go where? and what not.

as for the rust it was behind the headlight and the guages. i complained enouf so its covered by warrantie. i paid extra for extended warranty might as well get my money worth right.

What are you doing about your rust? I have an 89 covered in rust, frame, bolts, everything. What's the best way to get rid of it?

yea you can do the blinkers your self . just your choice is do you want led's or do you want normal flushmount bulbs. ..... if you want leds. be ready to work for it . i have a set that i'm not gonna use and i paid 35 bucks for them and now that i have tryed to put them on ( i'v cut off the tip of the wire ends to put on the right end connectors . ) and i know they wont take them back .  but i'll load up one of the pics i have of my flush mount fronts .. i'm going to do the rear ones next payday  and maybe make a custom  plate holder so i can  lose that tacky rear fender that hangs down

  Awsome info! and nice pics its just like i want to make my blinkers but wit a blue bulb cause i got a blue bike. just 2 more questions then ill be on my way to get them friday...

1. did you have to remove the fender?
2. are the color wires that connect the same?

You may want to check on the legality of a blue bulb for a turn signal.. I'm 99.9% sure that it's illegal just about anywhere in the US. Just my $.02

Do the lights yourself. Just buy turn signals that you like and then take off the old ones. Most replacement signals come with connectors already attached to the wires. However, they are usually not the right size for the connectors that are already installed on the GS500. I just cut the old connectors off my old signals and then sodered the old connector to my new turn signals. Once that was done I wrapped each wire with electrical tape, and then the two wires together with electrical tape. Then I installed the signals exactly how the old ones were installed by just plugging in the connectors. You don't have to worry about color of the wires because you are just completing a circuit so either direction will work as long as your wire splices are solid. If you don't want to soder you could just use a wire cap, but that's as good of a connection as soder.

+1 Better check this out....you don't want to be pulled over by the popo... 

I don't want to sound condescending or like I'm trying to act like a master mechanic, but changing your signals out has to be the easiest thing you can do to this bike. It pretty much involves removing a nut and unplugging 2 wires per signal. If you're not comfortable with this, avoid doing it yourself (along with any other work to the bike) and pay the mechanics to do it. But really take a look first, because you can do it, I promise. Save your money for gear! 

Oh, and I believe that blue lights can only be used by police or other emergency vehicles, but I may be wrong.

I wasn't comfortable wrenching on my bike at first, but I'm slowly getting more comfortable. That's one of the MANY beauties of the GS: it's SUCH a great bike to learn to ride AND wrench on. 

I assume your asking about the front fairing. No need to take off the fairing. The wires just slide behind a clip/bracket that's inside the fairing. Once you unbolt the stock signal and disconnect the connectors you can pull the stock signal and wires out of the fairing. Then just cut and replace the new signal and then slide the wires back into the fairing. I added some duct tape on the inside to hold everything in place, and I made sure to run th wires back through the clip that holds them in place.

For the rear you don't have to take anything off. The wires on the rear just run through Zip ties that keep them close the frame. Follow the same procedure and just run the wire back through the Zipties when you are putting everything back.

easy as pie . all you need is a 15mm  wrench ,some butt in connectors ( if you can get the ones that are heat shrink they  are better) some splicers,time,drill bit, drill .. and about an hour . and it will be done no removing the fairing . i'd say dont do the blue blubs. blue +flash =ticket  .

This is correct.  Trust me.  I'm the expert in blue / police lights...  I've gotten into trouble for having blue police lights.

1 hour??  It only took me about ten minutes for me to install my flushmounts on my '04f...  The LED's might take another 5 minutes for the extra resistor-thingy.

yes sir . as i stated before it was dark out and i was using a small light . and i ran in to issues with the big hole that was left with the stockers
