How did you drop the back 4 inches!?

The fork tubes can be slid through the triples all the way til they hit the underside of the handlebars, which is about 1/2 inch.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Culd you use handle bar risers?  :dunno_white:  That would give you more clearance.  Then when you lower the front, that would be negated, and you'd have your lowered front end.
Something is wrong with my twin...all of a sudden it's V shaped!  Wait, no, now it's a triple!  ...and I IZ NOT a postwhore!

i dont' want higher handle bars ....

maybe if i coudl get the handle bars off i could figure out how to lower the front but honestly i have no idea how to even get the bars off... we tried loosenign the bolts under the part where the handle bars are but all that happened was the nuts rounded and the screws spun....  man this bike is startign to make me mad

On each handlebar clamp there are two hex screws under the little plastic covers. Remove them and the screws and the top half of the clamps and bar will come off. Under the bar in the center there is another hex bolt. This is the bolts that you were trying to get loose. Now you can remove them by clamping a pair of vice grips on the mangled nuts and then using an allen wrench or hex socket to remove.
Edit: Though now that I think about it, the bottom part of the clamp and the top triple cover (silver part) might be cast as a single piece. Some one look at their bike or the parts phish please? IF that is the case, then the bolt you were fooling with was from that big piece...

If you remove the black plastic trim piece off the fork caps you will get another 1/8" of drop on the forks. Unless you want to go with clipons or the '89 handlebars, the only way is to use bar risers to get more of the forks thru the triples, and even then you are only going to get another inch or two until you have to start worrying about the fender hitting on stuff.

When I put lowering links on my wife's GS, it dropped a good 2~3 inches, until I ramped up the preload on the shock to max. This made the bike sit a bit taller and also reduced the chance that the rear suspension will bottom out and/or rub on the underside of the tail.
Really, you are going to have to accept, "cruiserish" handling from the GS if you lower the bike this much, even if you get the forks down as much as they can go. Even if you get the steering geometry near stock, you will have reduced lean angle clearance alot.

Good luck.
