K&N air filter What about the hoses?

The air box has the hose on the bottom to drain the blow by.  That can be taken off.  What about the hose that connects from the top of air box to the top of the engine?

That is replaced by a seperate crank case filter that comes with the kit.

I just installed the K&N dual flange filter (pn RU-2970).  It doesn't have any type of connection for the blow by hose.  I was just going to run a longer hose and let it run down where the air box drain ran before.  

Does this sound OK?

If you do, take the vent hose to an auto parts place and find a 1 way PCV valve that will fit it and install that between the vent and drain hose.

This will reduce the crank case pressure in the motor and eliminate the chance that you could suck bugs or dirt from the vent hose into the motor.

I ordered the filter form the post floating around on these boards.  The K&N air filter  Ru-2970 is just a single replacement for the filter box, not a kit.  Where do I get the crank case filter?

Look on the K&N web site for the stock# for the small/ breather filters.

Or go to the auto store and get one for about $3 - they are usually with the PVC valves. Find one that will fit the hose.

It's one unit with two holes that slip over and cover both carburator intakes.  It's held on by two hose clamps (supplied).
After installation, the increase in power  is very noticeable (once the carbs are jetted correctly).  It sounds cool too.  Depending on the load I'm putting on the engine, the intake can be louder than my stock exhaust.  I'm seriously thinking about the F1s exhaust now.

I just came back from a test ride.  I installed the K&N on bone stock carbs.  Runs like sh1t.  I will jet tomorrow for sure.  And, yes they are loud.  I can hear them over the stock exhaust by a long shot.  My F1s should arrive on Friday - Can't wait.

Tonight I had to run the choke open a little even after it warmed up.  Way too lean now for sure.

If you got just the filter and not the kit then you'll need to pick up a breather from the local parts store. I THINK it's 5/8" but I'm not positive. Best thing would probably be to take in the hose for comparison.

Like the racers have been saying, a filtered hose with a PCV valve would be ideal.

When I had my filter installed, my shop put a little filter on the drain hose....but it didn't come with the kit...

Ok ordered the ru-2970 by dond6's recommendation. It arrived today. Can someone give detailed instructions on how to install this thing. This is the first time I will be doing anything like this (installing new air filter and rejetting) so please make the instructions easy to understand. Thanks.

Ok, might take you up on that offer Paul. But probably wont be for a couple weeks. I know there are lots of instructions on rejetting, but I want instructions on installing that air filter (RU-2970). All this talk about the PVC valve and the breather from the auto parts store is confusing me.

Tigerstyle - The stock air box is most easily installed with the cabs off the bike and installed as one unit.  The K&N can be installed with carbs on the bike. Allthough, I like to install them first then install the carbs.   Just make sure the rubber is slipped all the way on the carb flanges and tighten very snug (Don't over tighten the clamps)

I am in the middle of rejetting one of my bikes.  I installed the K&N and the bike did not run well. Way To Lean.  I am waiting for my 140 jiets to come in and I'll try it again.  

One thing I've learned.  Haveing taken off the tank and carbs so many times now, I suggest a 6 - 7 inch peice of 2x4.  What for you ask?  When you lift the rear of the tank to turn off fuel and disconect lines, the block of wood can be used to prop up the tank.  The front of the tank rests on the rubber mount.  Slip it under the tank mount bracket and the other end on top of the battery.

I wish I had a nickle for each time I forgot to turn on the gas before bolting down the tank.  :x

So with the K&N I have, am I using the stock air box or not. It sounds like I am replacing the stock air box, correct? Then the air filter clamps directly on to the carbs, right?

Yes, you are correct!  The K&N dual flange/single element filter clamps directly onto the carbs.  Eliminating the stock air box.  

Make sure you jet before you run the K&N's or you will be very lean.  When I tried the filter and stock jets, it got hot, very hot and the plugs were almost white.  This is bad.  You want to have a nice tan/light brown color.

With stock exhaust, Srinath has suggested: 40 pilot jets, 140 main jets, and 3 1/2 turns out on the pilot screws with stock exhaust.

Have you drilled out the plugs on your carbs yet?  If not, I can do it for you when your ready.  It's very easy with a drill press and a small easy-out.

I've already bought the 140 mains, 40 pilots, and 2 washers for each needle. The bike may have been rejetted before by a previous owner, because the guy I bought it from said the plugs had already been drilled out when he bought it. I am the third owner. I'll probably give it a shot either next week on my days off or the week after that. I'm going to get the bike into the dealer to check the white smoke problem I've been having. I told him about the white smoke coming out of the pipe over the phone and he said don't worry about it, it is normal. Then I told him that there is a lot of it and another friend of mine said that I should definitley get it into the shop ASAP, so the dealer said to bring it in early next week. So, we'll see how that goes and then I'll get started on the rejetting and installing new air filter. Thanks for the help.
