Just did Palomar - uhmm... WOW!

Wasn't sure about the directions, so I went UP the mountain on South Grade Road, and back down the same way. Wow. It wasn't too bad going up, but coming down, it was pretty scary (lot of 180 degree switchback-type turns, and 90-degree turns, TIGHT ones).

But, it was an awesome ride nonetheless. Next time I'll go down the other way.

Any other comments about Palomar?

If any of you guys or gals are ever in Australia, or for those of us that are, you HAVE to check out this ride - Mt Glorious, just outside the CBD of Brisbane - Glorious by name, Glorious by Nature.

Check out the link below... it has a little road map and also pics of some of the best twisties I have even ridden. I have started to give pet names to the corners I like it that much! :lol:

The rain forest section can be tricky as it is cold and usually damp so you have to be careful. :x

And if you're ever up near Green Bay, Wisconsin ... take a pleasant ride up to the end of the Door Peninsula. Lots of bikes there, at least in the fall when the colors are changing. There's a nice loop between Sturgeon Bay and Sister Bay, then a single main road that goes out to Gills Rock at the tip.

A couple miles before you run out of land you'll see this:

I couldn't figure out any reason for the curves. Perhaps the highway department just decided to have a little fun...?

While that Wisconsin road looks like mild fun. there really is no comparison to CA mountain roads.

Where is the Palomar?

When we were in California a couple of years ago visiting my sister-in-law in LA, we drove up to Monterey. We took the coastal highway from about San Luis Obispo to Big Sur. I didn't ride then but I remember thinking that it would be a hell of a road to ride on. My wife and her sister could hardly look out the windows of the car. I wouldn't want anyone behind me though. Reminded me alot of the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton.

We drove back taking a seemingly back road from Carmel, inland to one of the big higways. I think that road, going up into the hills from Carmel, would be a great on a gs.

There is a section called 17 Mile Drive on the Pacific Coast Highway. It's an awesome road, but no bikes allowed :x . The residents complained a long time ago. The rest of the PCH is still incredible, I rode it from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and back in consecutive days. I was hurtin for certain to say the least.

Now how do they outlaw motorcycles and not other automobiles? What if you live there or are visiting someone that lives down that road? If its a public road there is no way they can outlaw it.

It's not actaully "public." It runs right through the Pebble Beach golf course.

I live about 25 minutes from the base of the mountain - LOVELY road, but you've gotta time it right or else you'll get pushed around by every R1, GSXR, CBR rider on the mountain - Saturdays and Sundays are crowded, but still a nice ride. The mountain seems to not favor my Laverda, but the Ninja 250 flies DOWN the mountain like you wouldn't believe!!!!

i made it up to palomar today...nothing else to do and finally a sunny day. lots of fun, basically kept it in 2nd gear 95% of the time and thrashed around. not too much traffic, and people were pretty good about using turnouts. this one soccer mom in a big astrovan kept using the shoulder to let me pass in the MIDDLE of these 180-degree decreasing radius corners...like i'm gonna shove my nose in a three-foot space and proceed to lean over the double yellows. her heart was in the right place, but her mind sure wasn't.
