I need new brake/clutch levers - when I bought my GS the ends were busted off them. I checked tricktape.com and they carry them, but they don't include the GS500 in their list of Suzukis. What brake/clutch levers would you suggest instead? Will the SV650 levers fit?

Black Snowman

I got mine from bike bandit. Had the forsite to by extras and I've already used them
Bikemaster actually makes them and I believe parts411.com carries them too.

google for Flanders Company.. they sell it for 7 or 10 bucks each.

For what it's worth, here is the clutch lever I bought from Flanders last September.  ($7.09 ... $10.38 shipped)
I finally put it on today.

Here is how it compares with the OEM lever that I "redesigned" on last year's trip to BC.  I somehow managed to step off my bike at a gas station without putting the kickstand down.

I wish I had taken a picture of the undersides of the levers.  The Flanders unit has a different shaped "indent" for the clutch safety switch to fit into.

But it works just fine!

I heartily recommend checking with a local shop first.  I'm as bad (worse, probably) as anyone else when it comes to buying online first.  But after checking a bit online, including the sites listed by some of the other posters, I considered how much sooner I'd have the levers safe to ride.  As it turns out, they had an aftermarket version of just the lever (brake, in my case) for 11 bucks.

Ended up paying about half of what I was about to spend online last night.  And I discovered some really helpful cool people.  And I was on the bike and riding 10 minutes later!

I busted a brake lever, replaced fairly cheaply from Suzuki dealer but these people do them  www.busters-accessories.co.uk they also do engine bars / crashbars specific to GS500. (Broken levers and supeficial engine damage often go hand-in-hand)

According to cross reference chart I have, which only goes to '00, but I have added the years that I know are the same.

Brake lever:
89-04 GS500
92-93 GSXR600
97-00 GSXR600
86-00 GSXR750
89-98 GSXR1100
99-00 GSX1300R
97-03 TL1000S
98-03 TL1000R
99-02 SV650/S

Clutch lever:
89-04 GS500
86-00 GSXR750
89-98 GSXR1100
99-00 GSX1300R
97-03 TL1000S
99-02 SV650/S

I am sure there are more that could be listed. Most any Suzuki bike that uses a cable clutch uses the same lever and as well as the brake lever is the same, just the master cylinder is different.
Common sense in not very common.

If your lever looks like the one in Kerry's photo, it should be easy to straighten. You could try a block of wood and a resin-faced hammer, or a couple of wood blocks and a C-clamp. That metal looks really soft, I bet it bends easily.

Blueknyt

it is soft, but for somereason cast aluminum will only bent once safely, if you try to bend it back, it will break. i have even tryed heating with a oxycetalene torch to soften it up, no good.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
