Either all my dreams have come true or former employers have beaten the dreams and aspirations out of me.

The more time I spend on the GS, the happier I am with it.  Even my must do mod list has cooked down to progressive springs, cartridge emulators and a rejetting.

I drive the cage less all the time.  Have a pickup to take the bike and anything else on the road as necessary.
I bought the bike instead of a performance car because if you are looking for a thrill, a moderate performance bike is a far greater thrill than a high performance car.

I guess I'm just a simple beast.

Y'know, if you just imagine your GS is an MV, you could be happier.  If you rode your GS like an MV, you might be suprised!
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

^Exactly.  It's a lot more impressive to see someone tearing the shaZam! up on a mediocre bike than standing by their $20,000 carpet weight.

Codger,
"The more time I spend on the GS, the happier I am with it" EXACTLY!  I've been riding mine since '92, so you can imagine how satisfied I am with it. I too am a simple man with with simple needs. Also why I still have the old sports car I bought in 1975. More, bigger, heavier, costlier is not necessarilly better.
It's not how fast you go, rather "how" you go fast!

Actually, what's more impressive than that is someone riding that $20,000 of carpet weight the way it was meant to be ridden. :thumb:

What would be impressive is to see GeeP racing his Autocar at Pikes Peak.

Dream car.... all black Chevrolet Suburban Z71

Dream bike.... don't know yet.... looking for some demo days this year.  I've always thought the Honda ST1300 was pretty cool, but haven't ridden it.  SV650, baby VStrom, damn, so many choices.

Depends on the model.  The U-404 is basically a 1 3/4 ton truck with hydraulic brakes.

As a general rule, GVW over 16,000, air brakes, more than two axles, or a trailer over 10,000 lbs requires a CDL.

There's also the Pinzgauer 710, which is a 1-ton truck.

I've dealt with both.  Either one is a very capable vehicle designed specifically for military transportation and rough civilian duty.  Many people with their cushy modern cars and pickups *think* they want a vehicle like this as a "daily driver".    Be aware they are not designed, nor are they capable of going over 55 MPH.  MAX

From the point of view of someone who has never driven a vehicle of this type they are loud, they handle poorly on road, and they have a terrible ride.  They don't have air conditioning, ass warmers, water-tight accomodations, power windows, locking doors, stereos, power seats, carpet, automatic transmissions, anti-lock brakes, or anything else a "normal" vehicle has.  Heaters are optional, very optional.

If this still appeals, go for it.  Wiping the smile of kids with jacked up Fords and Chevys gets boring after a while though.  Off road driving is simple:  Stomp on the gas and steer where you want to go.  Very anti-climactic.

Maintenance and repair is incredibly simple even on the Pinzgauer, which has a very complex drivetrain.  They are designed specifically for repair in the field with a minimum of tools and equipment.  It is possible to completely tear down and rebuild the engine of the Pinzgauer from WITHIN the vehicle.  This is possible because the engine is between the front seats.

You might try http://www.swissarmyvehicles.com  I've worked with them before, and they seem like decent people.

Haha...I've seen a bunch of Pinzgauers turned into snowcat-type vehicles.  They're capable everywhere except where it's normal.

RVertigo

Is it just me or does that Pinzgauer have a "Budget Rent-a-Personel-Carrier" price guide in the window?

Jake D

Yeah.  U-Haul, it looks like to me.

I saw a company, I think called White, that would pimp out Unimogs.  They were like $80K.  Leather, AC, sweet red paint and wood in the bed of the truck.

I've got a decent commute, however.  So no Unimog for me.

I just bought a GMC 1500 Silverado Z71 extra cab.  Black with tan leather.  I'll get it next week.
