Plug the holes, or........

So I drilled two holes in the exhaust (in the right place) would have to look at my drill to see the size, but it's smaller than a few mentioned thus far. I started the bike up and when it got to about 3.5k it sounded really farty and not what I was looking for at all.

So I back the choke up and it sounds better, until I goose the throttle and it starts with some small backfiring. Throttle response is worse than before and I'm just bummed that I drilled the holes in the first place. My filter's OK, but think that the bike was not ready to be opened up on the ass end without mods to the airbox and carbs. Detonation seems to be a prob throwing the formula off by un-restricting the can  :nono:

Just a story for those thinking about busting out the drill.

I love that story.  ;)

Drill them all the way out (your "farty" sound may be from the resonance of the gas comming thru those holes) and shim the needles with .004" washers. That will richen up the mid to top end and get rid of the backfiring.

Will do. I drilled 2 x .25" holes, one top and one bottom. Should I bust out the .5" bit as well as the washers?

eh?

No I meant, shim the needles in the CARBs out with a .004 inch pop rivet washers.

That was the question about the size of the holes. Thought you meant that they may be too small.

I have two 1/2" holes and I think they sound like crap. Going to try 2 more (4 total) when I get the bike back together.

Before I put on my slip-on, I considered drilling holes.  Then I went to a website that had a sound clip of a drilled can, and it sounded like ASS.  At least I though so, and I think he drilled out six holes in his cannister.  If I were you I'd see about getting a good slip-on or full system.  If money's an issue I'd say try to fill em, but good luck b/c that seems like it'd be tuff.  There was something about the drilled muffler that I really didn't like, I'm not sure what it was, but that's why I bought a slip-on I guess.  Good luck, I hope you get it sounding like you want.

Even my Yosh doesn't sound all that great. Something along the lines of a high-reving Harley Davison with a fart can from a Honda. Somtimes is sounds good and sometimes it sounds like ass. At least it's dynamic.

So that's the hitch. I think that my can sounded fine before the drilling. I'll wait for the beans to put on a full V&H or one of these slippers:

If a stock SV can will fit, an aftermarket slipper will.

.25" sheet metal screws it is 'til I get a game plan together.

I love my V&H! It sounds about the same as the yosh. Believe it or not, our bikes dont sound that much different than a Ducati twin. (i said THAT much...) Twins have a nice deeper sound. In fact, much DEEPER than any fart can honda can dream of. It also sounds nice at full bore too.

I know what you mean about being dynamic though... at different rev/throttle position combos.. there are completely different sounds.. .full throttle at low rpm sounds pissed... and light throttle at mid rpm sounds more like a quieter four cylinder street bike...

Seeing as though the V&H is the last production full unit out I'll probably go with that.

I'd be so into getting the PA riders getting to the same place at some point. I'm from State College, and it'd be a great point of contact for everyone this summer.

What do you think?
