Hi everyone. New member to this forum, proud owner of a black/silver 1996 GS500E (bought new in 1998).
Ridden in the USA until 2003, when I moved her to Monterrey, Mexico where she now gets ridden much more often on weekends. Even like that, she only has 6,000 miles  but lately I have gotten much more involved in the hobby and hope to enjoy her much more now.
This site is fantastic, very helpful info, THANKS to organizers and contributors!.  :thumb:

Hello there Alpha & Pandy.
Alpha: Thanks, next time I travel North I'll make sure and let you know. By the same token, if you ever get curious about Mexico, let me know, OK?
I commute between Laredo, Texas (Where I work as a Child Neurologist) and Monterrey, Mexico (where I work as a Husband and Dad of two  :cookoo: :kiss3:  :2guns: O0 :thumb:). I live for the weekends and lately the bike is a big part of them.
I "rediscovered" motorcycling just a couple of months ago and continue to be amazed at what this machine can do. IMHO It truly gives you well over 90% of what anyone could want, need or use out of a street motorcycle, awesome.
Just yesterday I went for a 100-mile ride in the mountains with my 12 yr old son riding in the back, we both came back home with a huge grin.  O0 :thumb:
Look forward to chatting with some of you.
Take care!
Daniel

Mexico huh? That does sound nice, barring the mafia wars that are going on right now!

I've been thinking about going sometime this summer maybe. It'd be nice to go down there and see the markets, have a beer or two, and enjoy some of the best barbacoa tacos ever made.

Hey it's easy! Just prep the bike and take I-35 South all the way until it ends, simple!  ;)
Your concerns about crime are well founded, so I would plan on those tacos and beer in Monterrey, not at the border (Nuevo Laredo). Definitely get out of Nuevo Laredo as soon as you get your crossing papers ready (you need to obtain a "temporary import" vehicle permit as you cross the border, other than that, no biggie) the road to Monterrey is a toll road, 4 lanes, perfect! Down there you will find some nice mountain roads that may rival some of your hill country ones and  no concern for cops, but you need extra care with cars, the street riding maxims: "assume you are invisible" and "everyone is out there trying to kill ya" definitely apply OK? Still, with care it should be a great adventure, you should definitely consider it.
Cheers,
Daniel
