Rust in the valves...Is it bad...

OK I got some rust in the backs of the valves and the exposed part of the stem. The bike sat a while before and after I got it. So is that bad. The contact/sliding areas (the ones I can see atleast through the ports) seem fine. The rust is also very light and not scaly bubbly rust. Is that bad, and how to fix it. The motor turns over easy though so no rust inside I am guessing. Also how did it rust...yes it was exposed in the rain a while and it has a Yosh pipe so water can get in the pipe and hence has access to the ports but well would it rust and if so I have had other bikes that are in the same situation and I have started them and ridden them without paying heed to this. So well confused...So please post what you know/think.
Cool.

Between all the grit and carbon bits the get banged around cylinders, it won't make any difference to the bike.
You probably did do a bit of harm to the seals of the vavles that rusted in the down position and had their stems exposed to the air. But unless you notice alot of smoke or oil usage, don't worry about it.
The only way to clean them up would be to take off the head, drop the vavles and polish them with a scotch pad.

I was planning to clean it differently...How about using one of those dremel flex extensions, and that nifty little soft brush thingy and set the valve closed and basically work it around the thing with wd 40, then spray wd40 some more and suck it with the vaccum cleaner or one of those brake bleeding kit things or hell I should probably drink it with a straw for neglecting the thing. So how is this idea...then squeeze that lucas oil stabilizer thing in there and work it everywhere with my hand till the bike is put back together.

You aren't really going to help anything polishing the backs of the valves. The seating faces of the valves, and the valve seats, are the only parts that matter, and your techniques won't help either ot those. Oh, and the part of the valve stem that goes into the guide, but if you polish in the closed position, you won't get to it anyway.

If you aren't going to run it for awhile, fog everything with engine storage oil, like it would have for normal storage. There are other areas, such as cylinder walls, that rust easily too.

You are living in a humid past of the world now, and things will rust much easier. It probably hasn't done any real harm - the cylinder walls are the most vulnerable to damage from rust.

What Kevin said.

You are likely to make things worse if you go poking at an assembled engine's vavles with a dremel! :o

Well its gonna be up and running within the week...and what you saying is Leave the thing alone...its had enough grief from me...Fine...
So these things rust easy and often and the engine can take that to a certain extent???
Thanks.

Yea Jetting....
Well rust isn't jetting and damn everything rusts here...I left my vulcan un painted for 2+ years where I had done frame cutting and rod inserting...and it slightly rusted at some welds....till I got here...The damn thing had a red river running from in in a few weeks, finally took it off and sanded and painted it and its rusting where I nicked the paint putting it on.
Crapo weather/humidity/rain....anymore of this and I'm movign right back to CA....Just kidding...Hate traffic and crowds and cost of living even more. What's rust...just another opportunity to powder coat the damn thing.
Cool.
