hola gs'ers!  as my title states, i hate bike insurance, period.  i'm shopping for a few models of bikes in terms of ownership costs and insurance costs.  now granted i have a ton of tickets (but not crashes ever), BARE LIABILITY insurance from progressive would be about 400 bucks a year for a naked SV650.  the bike i really want is the (gasp!) kawasaki z1000.  the quote for bare liability for that was like 800 bucks.

what i wanna know is who would ya'll recommend for the BARE minimum liability insurance that's super cheap?  progressive is so far out, and geico has been done with for me.  i'm open to any company as long as it'll meet the state requirements.  thanks guys!

99 for my car full coverage per month

22 for the bike full coverage per month

Dude, don't even start to complain about your rates because you've got it good.  In Canada we get raped on insurance.  I pay $1000/year for liability only on my '93 GS, with no tickets.  With 2 speeding tickets my rate would quickly rise to nearly $2000.  Oh, and that Z1000 would cost me about $4000/year to insure.  If I could get my bike insured for $400/year I'd send a nice gift to my insurance broker.

I'll back you up on that one Mike

I'm looking at a 2006 GS I'm 32 wife, kids no tickets and they are telling me $1500-1900 a year for full coverage. I had a deal set up on a 2000 R6 (free if I wire a house for some one) only one insurance group in all of Ontartio will cover bikes in the Super Sport class and it was going to be about $4800 a year  :cookoo:

Why is it so much everyone may ask? It not incase you hit some ones car, or if you fall off and kill the bike or yourslef, its to cover the person sitting on the back of your bike, in case something happens to them and they want money over it.

BTW Mike, check out www.ridersplus.com they are Canadian gave me a quote for the 06 GS just basic stuff for about $700 a year, I couldn't go that way because of the loan I'm looking at to buy the 06

Idk about Canada, but here in the states you should definately shop around.  Gieco wanted $2200 a year for full coverage on my GS, while NJ Rider only wants $330 a year for the same coverage and a lower deductable.  It seems to me motorcycle insurance varys more than car insurance.  Try looking for a more local insurance company that specializes in insuring nothing but toys.  Go to your local dealer and ask them what they recommend..

I don't know A-train...  Not to be a jerk, but why should your rates be as cheap as mine ($133/yr. through Progressive) when you've had "a ton of tickets" and I've never even been pulled over in my whole life?  Insurance is not a flat rate for everyone for a reason.  Statistically, people in your situation are a higher risk to an insurance company than someone in my situation.  No offense, but by not slowing down a measly 10 mph, you raised your own insurance rates.  No need to blame the insurance companies.

Try bikeline.com where I pay 72/yr for bare bones liability on my 99 GS. I shopped around and they were the cheapest by far, and all they do is bike and ATV coverage

I pay $680 a year for $1,000,000 liability / underinsured motorist.  I don't think bare liability coverage is a very smart thing to do on a bike.  What if some uninsured yahoo illegal Mexican hits you with his roach coach?  Or the guy that hits you only has bare minimum coverage?  $40,000 doesn't go very far in the trauma ward.

That said, State Farm seems to have the most reasonable bike rates.  That's who I have insurance with.

Insurance is expensive until you need it.   ;)
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

... see, here in BC, the only choice for basic third party liability ($200,000) is  :2guns: ICBC, the provincial Crown corporation.  With 25% discount it would cost me $760/year . It costs me $540 for 7 monthes of basics insurance, including the short term surcharge on the premium and licensing fee,   :dunno_white:  which has me considering the  DRZ400SM, the same $540 can buy me a year then.  :icon_twisted:

Geep, why are you paying for $1M liability?  Do you really think you can do that much damage with your bike?

Ya don't even start this when you have tickets and have 400 and I have a clean record and pay 1400! A SV 650 goes to 2000 and any other bike is higher.. Cdn insurance is insane, so this thread should stop lol

GeeP

You apparantly have to carry the same liability as you do underinsured motorist.  Why?  I have no idea.  I'm sure there's some logical legal reason, but as I don't sell insurance or manage a pool I haven't really thought about it.

I think the 1mil liability costs around $40 more a year over minimum.  What costs in the underinsured motorist / medical.  Makes perfect sense considering how hard it would be to cause that much damage with a bike.

i have progressive . i pay 76 bucks and some change a month ........ comes out to be about 1k a year .. kinda high . but .. i could not afford  the insurence on a 2003 CBR600... everywhere i looked they wanted 5k a year ( about what the bike was worth )  and the way it was put to me ..... they see that the bike is not gonna last longer then a year .  but i do have one speeding ticket and 2 no seatbelt tickets .... so .. if  i could swing a 400 year insurse plan i'd be happy !

Get old, gett married.

I pay 109 a year for 300/500/500 plus 10K medical on my GS.  It is an '89, so they wouldn't give me enough for a payout to make comprehensive worth it.  I insured my '77 BMW R100RS with the same coverage plus comprehensive, with an agreed $5,000 value, no deductable, for $69 a year.

But in Canada, your paying extra for that "free" health care!  :thumb:

haha i love it, seriously!

okay, to all my fellow (yes, the bike's dead but i'm a gs'er 4eva) gs'ers from canada: if you knew how much healthcare cost here you'd laugh.  i'm blessed to have insurance through my dad's work at hilton hotels.  otherwise you're talking $200 doctor visits and $6000 for emergency visits.

also, i miswrote: i don't have a ton of tickets, i have 2 really bad ones.  i have a reckless driving about 2 weeks after getting the GS, then a speeding ticket like 6 months later.  but since tickets go away after 3 years, i only gotta wait about a year and some change before the reckless goes away.  that one is HUGE!

and by the way, why is insuring a sv650 so cheap?  have insurance companies ever ridden one?  dear god those things are fast!  my roomie got his up to 137 i believe.  anyways, thanks for the recommendation on bikeline, i'ma keep that in mind.

also, i might move to washington state

But I do have a good idea, have friends that live south of the boarder (not Mexico)

But Canadian healthcare is not free like most people think, yes when I go to a Doctor I just pull out my Ontario health card and I'm good to go. Its there in my pay cheque every week, something around 10%-12% of my pay goes in to the health care system. Thats if I use it or not

As for $1,000,000 liability, I plan on carrying that as well, remember that covers you for any damage you do, be it a car, a person, if you end up in some ones house, or if you go off the road in to the ditch that has water run off you spill gas, oil and other goodies that have to be cleared up safely so the wildlife is not effected by it. Its amazing how fast the bills could add up.
