and by the way, why is insuring a sv650 so cheap?  have insurance companies ever ridden one?  dear god those things are fast!  my roomie got his up to 137 i believe.  anyways, thanks for the recommendation on bikeline, i'ma keep that in mind.

State Farm even beat out bike-line for my 2006 SV650S: $600/yr for full coverage, 100/300/50 with uninsured included. State Farm bases their rates on cc's (and give a pretty good discount for multiple policies...we have our house and most of our cars insured with them), but I also understand they turn their nose up at anyone without a clean record....but...something for you to think about in a year!  :thumb:

The SV is a good bike, but to call it 'fast' is another thing. My buddy has one and I might get one, I love them but compared to most 600's it doesn't keep up. It has the low end power because of the VTwin but falls short w/ top end power.
Compared to the GS all sportbikes are fast, the SV is the beginner amoung them however. As well the FZ 6 from Yamaha but that was made for affordable insurance w/ the R6 engine tuned down.

Is all that PIP/uninsured protection really needed if you have regular medical insurance (not tied to your motorcycle)?  I checked the health insurance through my employer, and they start coverage when the car/mc insurance runs-out.  The protection seemed higher, so it actually sounded like a bad idea to have the medical coverage attached to the bike insurance at all.

You're in CA...locals here always seem to unanimously recommend State Farm. I have AAA and they've been great.

I recommend AAA also:
$368 per year gets me:
Liability: 100/300
Medical: 100/300 (I think)
Comprehensive/Collision: $1000 deductible
Plus uninsured motorist coverage

No tickets or accidents on my record, tho, and have home and automobile insured through them too (highly recommended for homeowners insurance)

Of course with my recent crash, I'll be paying $300 more per year, starting 2007...

i have a reckless driving about 2 weeks after getting the GS, then a speeding ticket like 6 months later.

OK... If I had a reckless driving charge on my record my insurance would easily rise to somewhere around $5000 or more per year.  Just thank your lucky stars that you can get your insurance that cheap without sucking anyone off.

I have $1 000 000 liability, $500 deductible and my bike's declared value is at $0 - $1000.

At the above levels, my 1996 GS is about $900/yr Cdn. and my car (96 Z24) is about $1500/yr here in Manitoba.
Just to compare provinces... last year when I lived in Ontario, my car was $2400/yr (I didn't own my GS back then)... and the year before that when I lived in New-Brunswick it was $3300/yr. With NO speeding tickets, hell I've never even had a parking ticket!

Any bike over 501cc's here automaticaly shoots the insurance rate up to a minimum of $2100/yr

That's retarted!!! The cheapest insurance I found in the part of the GTA I lived in was State Farm in Oshawa (the agent's name is Nina Romano... the other State Farm offices in Oshawa were jerks). I liked Nina's office cause they were more personal than your average insurance agents... When I walked in, I was always greeted with a nice 'Hi Luc'.

PS: If you do end up talking to them, thell Nina and Gen (Jen) that Luc (the one that moved to Winnipeg) says Hi!

I hear ya about the smaller offices for insurance.

with my car, i insure with TD insurance and they keep on buying up insurance companies. they're massive now. I'm just a number the reps on the other end of the phone see on their computer screens. They're not too concerned about going the extra mile for customer service because aside from the few comments they'll place on my account during our interaction its not personal.

with my bike, i decided to insure with a smaller insurance company that resells kingsway insurance.. i get hand signed letters, i have a real insurance broker i can talk to, and everything goes smooth as a baby's butt 100% of the time. It makes the ridiculous GTA insurance situation less of a hassle.

It's true Mike Mike... If it wasn't for the lower insurance prices here in Manitoba, I wish Insurance was privatized. With the current MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) system which regulates rates... there isn't any competition amongst brokers or any competitive rates at all. Furthermore there isn't any incentive for insurance sellers to be nice, or go the extra mile for a customer, cause they know that you can't go next door and get a better rate.

But that's the worst it gets I guess in this case, so I shouldn't complain...
