Going to get some new gear tomorrow. Brands to consider? (~150-200 budget)

Hey tomorrow I'm gonna replace my unsafe mesh jacket and non-leather gloves. The store sales person was kind enough to let me buy them knowing I was a first time rider...  Anyways I understand I need all leather gear so I'm going to buy a new tight fitting jacket and some comfortable gloves. What brands should I consider? I don't really wanna spend more than 150 total, less would be better.  :thumb:

Unsafe Mesh? What brand/model is it? I crashed in a mesh Fieldsheer jacket and it held up GREAT! Yeah it was toast afterwards, but it protected me perfectly! As for the gloves, yeah. Replae them. Check out Olympia gloves.

Also, leather costs a lot more, so you're probably going to have to look for clearance items that fit you well or go for the less expensive stuff. Icon stuff, from what I understand, isn't that bad. It's cheaper than the nice stuff (Teknic, Alpinestars, Dainese) but should be functional for the street.

Personally, I wouldn't buy ANY Joe Rocket stuff. They have quality issues with their stitching.

I have two joe rocket jackets now and see no problems with stitching. true i did JUST get one. but my other is a half leather half mesh jacket, and I've had not a single problem with it. my friend has a full leather jacket that hes been wearing daily for about 3 years now with no problems at all. joe rocket gloves on the other hand, I'm not so convinced about.

you won't find much in the way of leather jackets for <$150.  As mentioned before the closeout section of newenough.com might be your best bet.  Which mesh jacket do you have now?  They're not necessarily unsafe, just not as safe as a padded leather jacket would be.  I wear a First Gear textile jacket and I feel perfectly safe in it.  It's too hot here in East Texas for leather.

It's some bobo mesh jacket with lame pads that move all around my arm. It has button snaps to make it fit tighter around my arm. Like those would stay snapped during a crash. I guess the jacket is ok but it is WAAAY too loose on my body. I want something tight and snug, with pads.

(:poke)  i'd like to point out that budget is from canada, and that the riding season up there is equevlant to a american month.
(:end poke)

but seriously, if you have issues with your skin, like you enjoy grafts and scars, buy a joe crapit,  or if all you are ever going to do is sit on your bike, "parking lot pimpin"  they will be adiquate for that.    go get a tecnic chicane jacket, the same quality that tecnic puts into thier leather gear but you can wash it at home. and it's waterproof for those summer sprinkles.

THE ONLY GLOVE ADVICE YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO:  the right way to calcuate your glove budget is to put a dollar in your pocket every time you move a muscle in your hand, for a full 24 hour period. then you will realize how important your hands are, and those hundred buck alpine star full gauntlets won't seem very expensive anymore.  just ask pablo for the last crash pics.  to futher re-enforce this point.  then ask alpha for his crash pics whare he was wearign shitty gloves. and then ask how much fun the RR is.

there are only two ways to learn to wear gear, to crash and realize that you need better gear as you limp around for months on end, or to watch your buddie crash and watch him limp around for months on end. either way you need to be exposed to the pain first hand to really realize what happens when you go sliding across the asphalt.
the left side of the bike is always from the riders point of view.

Maybe you could get rid of the mesh jacket and replace it with a well fit high quality textile jacket with padding and continue saving your pennies for a leather jacket.

No sense in buying the cheapest leather jacket you can find if you're not going to be happy and comfortable if you went and got a good textile jacket at least it would be something you'd want to keep and wear while you saved for a leather jacket

For $150 for both a leather jacket and gloves, I don't think that's realistic.

I'd keep the mesh jacket and spend the money on good quality leather gloves.  I'd recommend Held.  I had Dainese before, and the Held's are much higher quality.  I got Held Krypton's from Motobrio for a lot less than I could find here in the US.

Mesh jackets aren't as good as leather jackets, but they're still worth having, especially if it's hot outside.  If you decide on leather gear, all the popular brands should be pretty good.  I personally favor Fieldsheer as a good value, but you can often find Teknic or Joe Rocket leather on closeout.

Well not quite, I ride from April-November (8 mounths) and just for the record, a Canadian month is the same length as an American one :icon_rolleyes:

I honestly don't know why you hate Joe Rocket so much. You seem to think that it's a poser brand, but most people consider icon THE poser brand. There's no real way to definitively determine if a brand is crap without crash testing all of them in the exact same way, same conditions and same type of crash to see witch holds up better. I work in a leather shop, and I've seen a few crashed Joe Rocket suits that held up well. (as well as a few Technic and one Spike suit) I would say that all of the big name manufactures make good quality jackets, but some do it better than others. I wouldn't go as far to say that any major name company's jackets are only suited for sitting at a coffee shop. That's what they make that thin fashion leather crap for. Gloves are an entirely different story.

If you are on a budget you are better off looking for 2nd hand gear. A high quality textile jacket is far better than a cheap leather jacket and your money will go futher with textile gear.
I have crashed in textile gear at low speed and it held up well.

Even cheap moto gloves at a moto-stealer are gonna be $30+......  Most are about $50 or higher.  Not gonna leave you much for a nice jacket...

I'm jumping in with other people...  Check newenough.com and motorcyclecloseouts.com...  Or look for used gear.

So I picked up the new gear today. 230 for a Roshin Kiso Textile Jacket. It's listed on their website as Motoboss but it has Roshin all over it. It's a real nice snug fit.

I got Dainese gloves for 140 (they are all black unlike the picture).

Let me know what you guys think. Also does anyone else shop at CycleGear? They seem like a great place and they have a store locally.  :thumb:

$230 for a basic textile jacket with cheap armor?  :o  It's definitely nice looking but for that price you could have scored a nice leather or 1000 denier motoport textile.  My First Gear jacket has simlar features to yours and it was $70 brand new on e-bay.  The gloves look really nice.

JOE ROCKET mesh  feels good.  looks good. I'll let you know how she holds up when I go down.

Tussey,

I had Dainese X-1 Pelles, they look similar to those gloves of yours.  Mine wore out in several of the fingertips in less than a year.  Pretty comfortable though.  I bought my Held Krypton's for about $140, they are far superior to my Dainese gloves.

Cycle Gear has great service, sometimes great deals too.  I went to a Cycle Gear over a year ago, then went back a couple months ago.  They remembered who I was, I was very surprised.
