I'm looking into getting a more aggressive set-up for my ride, but was wondering about going with clip-ons .... for those that have made this mod, what did you do with the stock bars mounts on the upper tree?

What you're going to have to do if you get clip ons (~$120) is either take off the top plate, drop the forks about half an inch, and then mount your clipons. You'll notice quicker steering, but not drastically.

Or you can drop the forks an inch and mount them about the top plate and grind off the clamps, paint, and enjoy. You'll notice DRASTICALLY quicker steering and a drastic loss of high speed stability.

OR you can mount them under the top triple and headlight mount.. That would cause some interference between the tank and bars, but if you never lock your bars it won't be an issue.

I suggest the first way if you're set on doing this.

hmmmm...I've always mounted under the tripples.  Spanning them out enough to clear the tank will leave you reaching a bit, but it works, gives you more leverage, and it looks nifty.

Mmmm ... I was never really sold on clip-ons anyway. I think that I'm going to go w/ the SM1 or 2's ... the only concern that I have on those is if they will fit a '98. As stated on another post, their site says '99 - '05 GS's.

I guess I could always order them, and if they don't fit I can return 'em ... Oh well, shipping time is just beer-time in disguise!

if they fit a 99, they'll fit a 98, and anything to 90 as well. When I installed my SM bars they didnt even HAVE gs bars listed. I bought an SV bar.
