OK Here is the next hack...
Will work if you have the paper filter and not with UNI...well Not without some extra modding anyway.
Take off paper filter and cut/remove the element part of it with the mesh and everything. The metal plate which is used to bolt in is all you need from the filter. I think MEK takes off the glue...not sure so you could soak it in Mek one end at a time and have a clean filter...I'll try it tonight and post back for sure about MEK.
Then Buy a 4-5 inch long S&B filter with a 55mm mouth diameter and about 3 inches body diameter. The regular cylinder one will do. No fancy tapers needed.
Look at it and admire how much it looks like the stock filter. Then clamp it on the flange (may have to grind the flare down a bit or bend it or knock it so its not flared so much) and put the metal plate back on the airbox with some sticky back fun foam (available at Walmart) glued on the filter plate - on the same side as the flange....need it for sealing. Then oil the filter and bolt it in with longer bolts into the airbox.
I am doing it when the parts show up... Easy mod IMHO.
With a UNI the flange is made of rubber...so you have to put in a PVC or metal pipe insert, You also have to use foam instead of fun foam for the gasket.

I believe the filter was $12. Fun foam was 25 cents. MEK was about a 10-15 cents worth...A can costs $2.50, I'll Prolly use less than 5% of it. Some random grinding needed...I'll take pics and post and pantablo...what the hell are you getting at???

That's what I was getting at. Better use of my time is to order online and do something else on my free time-like ride. I make in 1/2 hr of work enough to buy the K&N...so if it takes me 1/2 hr or more to do this it isn't worth it.

What about good old fashioned ingenuity man, what about not bowing to the man, what about blazing your own trail, what about thumbing your nose at the big filter conglomerates that exploit third world children to weave their filters...Where is your pioneering spirit man...

You guys need to understand that what Srinath gets out of doing cheap, labor-intensive mods is akin to what most of us get out of riding, or [substitute favorite pasttime here].

I'm all for encouraging the inventive mind.  If we all just rode, who would come up with the improvements over the years?

Well I cant stop myself from thinking - huh doesn't it look just like that, or that should fit in there just about this way or doing this will lower the bike or raise the bike or some like that...So I put it to good use...Usually I make things around the house/garage fit the bikes I want fitted. Dish soap makes good bike cleaner, chain cleaner, vaseline helps rubber last longer and can be used to preserve vinyl etc etc

Not at all!

You only have to look through my web page to see my Srinath-inspired mods and techniques (see Lockhart Phillips Short Stalk II, Float Height Check) as well as my own Srinath-like Accessory Power Outlet, Throttle Retainer and In-Dash Clock mods.

I suppose that many people are so busy or have enough other interests that time is more valuable to them than money.  I'm not sure what boat Srinath is in, but I currently have enough free time (no kids!   ) that I'd rather save the money.  And like I said before, the DIY thing can be its own reward, even if it DOES take some extra time/money.

Wait a second.  So how it is it that you have more posts than the other top 10 (or so) posters put together?  I don't think the money-for-time-worked illustration applies here ... unless you get paid for posting!

Be honest - would you rather ride than post?  I submit that the answer is "Yes - sometimes.  But at other times I'd rather post than [ride, swim, sleep, other]."

Well Said Kerry...He has a web site where he picks up and maintains this info, and posts here a ton and he's one to talk about using the time to ride insetad of putting on an air filter. My whole mod took about - well conservatively 3 seconds, walking past the pile of parts next to my GS.  Of course the effort of putting in on will be say 20 mins to 1/2 hour or so as opposed to the 2 mins the K&N will take but Knowledge is priceless and guess what - if in the middle of the desert a large group of bandits came by and ripped off my airfilter...I only need to walk as far as the nearest tractor supplies place and get a clamp on emgo or UNI or K&N and put it on and keep riding.
