Does this sound like a valve clearance problem?

I'm getting very strange symptoms. I just cleaned the carbs I put them back together correctly so I don't think it's a carb problem. But then again...

Symptoms are..
-Starts up fine everytime.
-Every time I pull to a stop, the engine chokes and wants to die. I have to rev it to keep it from dying. This happens everytime.
-Sometime I get a "bouncy idle", but it's stable and doesn't stall.
-Since carb rebuild gs500 doesn't seem to like Wide-Open-Throttle anymore. Although I'm not sure about this. Maybe it's only in my head. I can't blast wide open throttle from 4k like I used to be able to. Eeach time the bike seems to hesitate or choke. Today it bogged so bad on a WOT that I switched to reserve thinking maybe I was outta gas. I pulled up to a gas station and filled up with 2.7. So I'm not sure if what happened today was out of fuel problem or something else.

Comments are welcome. Thanks.

Sounds very much like mine when float height was off. (Fuel level way too high.) Check it with Kerry's clear hose test. (Can be done without disassembly.)

The bouncy idle could be drawing air.

+1 what MarkusN says.

If thats not it. I think it sounds like a choke problem.  my bike acts that way if I forget to pull the choke back after warm up.

Check your cable and the slide, make sure it slides back and forth easily.  i had one bend and not slide easily. a simple bend cleared it up.

I was wondering the same thing (valves) about my bike (Kat 750), it's doing the exact same thing.  I will have to check out the float hieght but on the Kat, there is no little nib on the bottom of the float bowl to attach a clear line for checking this.  On the Gs you can check the float hieght by attaching a clear fuel line to the nib on the float bowl and crack open the screw.  Bend the tube up in a U shape b4 opening the screw.  The level of the gas in the tube reflects the level in the float bowl.  I think it's supposed to be at or just below the top of the bowl.

Mine starts great, but occasionally bogs down and then stalls when I pull in the clutch.  I've had to crank the idle up a bit to keep it from stalling but the rpms kind of bounce a 100 to 200 rpm when idling.  WOT throttle at higher rpms works great though.  I adjusted the floats according to the manual but ...

I might try turning in the idle mixture screws another 1/4 turn as well.  Since I'll have that all apart, I might as well check the valves and balance the carbs too.

Also check the spark plugs. Mine were fouled up so bad that it was a real struggle to keep it at idle rpms.
