Check your float valves. PRI should not affect your low speed characteristics if they do their job.

When you work on your carbs you have to start it in PRI to refill the float bowls. I've forgot mine on PRI a few times before.

Have you ever ran your GS at 80-90mph continuously? If you did, then you had it on PRI. Fuel starvation kicks in if it's just ON. As soon as I hit the freeway to work everyday, I switch it over to PRI and then switch it back when I get on surface streets. I don't notice a difference in performance when running one of the other either.

Mine works fine in PRI.  That's the only way it would run for the first year - until I figured out the previous owners hooked up the carbs incorrectly.

Now it runs fine in PRI and ON, from low speeds to 85mph for extended periods of time.

That's odd. I've never had mine in PRI (haven't rouched carbs yet) but I've done very long trips on highways (130-150kms) all day w/ it in the ON position and never realized any starvation..  :dunno_white:

When you're running at high speeds there is a lot of fuel draw. Extended speeds above 85mph or so will drain the float bowls of the carbs faster than they can be filled by the vacuum draw. Running them in PRI runs fuel directly to the carburetors, thus bypassing the fuel starvation.

Not all petcocks are affected by the fuel starvation problem (my theory is that it's caused by a hardened diaphragm in the petcock limiting fuel flow), but many are. If you can sustain WOT for a long time you are lucky. I never had a problem either.
