What is the biggest rear tire you can put on the 05 gs500f? I got the 140/70 but want tsomethong wider. any help is appprecaited...

pantablo

why do you want wider? what will you gain? if its for the look of a wide tire...forget it. even the 150/60 that is about the biggest that you can get on the stock rim will look tiny when you pull up alongside a sportbike. and the 150/60 isnt great to ride on when it wears because its pinched on the rim. it squares off in a wierd way making the bike fall too quickly when leaned over far.

the bike will ride better with the stock 130 or 140 series tire.

to get a 150 or 160 you'd have to swap the rear wheel for something else. search on here for 'rear wheel' or katana rear wheel' as the kat is almost a direct swap.

in the race corner it says the 150 will fit, and you will be able to lean bike over alot. But the only thing is that you cant ride to the outside of the tire, so at max lean it wont show that your on the outside of your tire cause its so big. other then that they say it will fit, and they also said that a 140 sucks cause the tire is tall and makes the handeling alittle wack.

A 150/70 is the widest tire that will properly fit on the 3.5" GS500 rear wheel.  It's an approved fitment for bias ply tires and also an approved fitment by some of the tire mfg but not others for radial tires. Some will fit without alterations and some require grinding a bit off the brake torque rod for clearance.

I've had 2 sets of Z4/Z2 and 1 set of AV45/46 sport touring radials on GS's and all were much better tires all around than the OE bias ply tires.  I now have a set of Lasertecs with a 150/70 rear and it handles as good or better all around than anything else I've used.  Just won't last as long as the sport touring radials.

The 150/70 is only about a half inch wider than a 130/70 mounted on our 3.5" rim and doesn't compare to a 180 or 190 tire on a sportbike in apearance, but compared to a GS with a OE rear tire, the 150/70 Lasertec makes the 130/70 look like a bicycle tire.  The 150/70 fills the space and looks so much better in my opinion

The 150/60 rear radial is not approved by any tire mfg in this country for fitment on the 3.5" rim.  Many are happily running them on the GS500s and the EX500s(Ninjas).

Yes, I ran a 150/60 on my gs once and it was a huge improvement until it started to wear. in the beginning I could feel the bike fall faster into the corner once the lean reached a certain level. it was manageable. as the tire wore down, and because the 1/2" of tire at the edge never contacted the ground, the edge where the worn tread and the untouched tread met created an actual edge. once the bike leaned over far enough to reach that edge the "falliin in" was abrupt and scared the piss out of me on more than one occasion. the 140/80 radial is taller so the bike falls more but also more predictably. a 140/70 is also available but only in bias ply. I went with a 150/60 to get a radial on there...went back to 140/80 after that and bike actually handled better. the racers can deal with the characteristics of the 150/60 (although they switch up to wider wheels when they can) because they're experienced riders. new or newer riders should stick to 140's.

I had a 150/70 on mine but that was with a bandit 400 wheel.  If your going to do it do it right and get the properly sized wheel.

If Metzeler, Pirelli, and  Bridgestone say the 150/70/17 tire size is an approved fitment on our 3.5" rims for their Z6, Lasertec, Strada, Demons, BT020, and BT45 tires; who am I to argue?  If it works for me, it works.   :)
